Lab Report Instructions After lab, you will write a Formal Discussion, a multi-paragraph discussion of your experimental results and data analysis. This discussion will include (not necessarily in this order): • Analysis of IR spectrum, identifying major peaks in the functional group region. • Analysis of 1 H-NMR spectrum, including chemical shifts, integrations, and splitting patterns and using these to determine which set of hydrogens is associated with each peak. • Discussion of % yield. Come up with possible (and plausible) explanations for loss of material/low % yields, or if you know that your calculated yield is artificially high. • Based on the NMR spectrum (and possibly other observations during the experiment) how successful was the experiment at providing pure product? Can you identify any impurities that are still present based on the NMR spectrum? • Any problems you encountered, errors committed, or anything you did that is different than the procedure written in your lab notebook. Identify the cause of problems whenever possible. • Likely sources of error. Sources of error are not mistakes or accidents; they are limitations in the procedure, technique or equipment that affect your results. Which were unavoidable? Are there ways to improve the procedure to prevent some of these problems? The final Formal Discussion should be double-spaced, 12 pt font. Not counting figures, a good discussion will likely be 2-4 pages long, but it will not be graded based on length. It WILL be graded based on completeness, correct interpretation of results, style, and format.
