A 16-year-old male from Los A ngeles with end-stage renal disease is admitted to the hospital for evaluation of a febrile episode. Laboratory studies show ed that the boy was hypogammaglobulinemic. A blood culture obtained on admission was positive for faintly staining, curved, gram-negative rods from the aerobic bottle only. An oxidase-po sitive, catalase-negative, motile, helical, gram-negative rod was recovered on chocolate agar after 3 days of incubation at both 37°C and 42°C. This organism did not grow on Campylobacter blood agar. What is the most probable etiologic agent?
