An educational psychologist hypothesises that teenagers’ confidence improves significantly post GCSEs. She randomly selects a sample of 14 year old students who have not yet taken their GCSEs and additionally randomly selects a separate sample of 15 year old students who have recently taken their GCSEs. She administers a questionnaire which aims to measure students overall mean confidence (using 20 items measuring confidence in an array of domains, such as academic and social, and using a Likert response scale from 1, no confidence at all to 5, completely confidence).
