comparing the single-member district plurality and proportional representation systems
Project description
In todays world, there are two main types of electoral systems: the single-member district plurality (SMD-P), often referred to as First-Past-the Post, and proportional representation (PR). Each system has its positive and negative aspects. In this short essay, I will identity and describe two positive and negative aspects for each system. In the first paragraph, the focus is on single member district and the second paragraph looks at proportional representation. Finally, in the conclusion, I express my opinion on which electoral system is better.
Your second paragraph (or first body paragraph) should present two positive features of the first-past-the-post (or district/majoritarian) electoral system as well as one negative feature. Your third paragraph (or second body paragraph) should present two positive features of the proportional representation electoral system as well as one negative feature. Your conclusion should begin with the sentence (again, verbatim): “In my opinion, ___________ is the better system for these reasons:…..” You will fill in the blank with either first-past-the-post or proportional and go on to list which arguments are reasons you find most persuasive.
You may incorporate any information discussed thus far in the course. The video debate in this learning module should be your primary source of material for the essay
