When we explore music of the twentieth century, students tend to react strongly to movements such as Minimalism and Expressionism, among others (remember our first encounter with Varese in week 1?). Composers, critics, and musicians of the time passionately debated a very basic question: what is music? For this week’s discussion, you will do the same. What constitutes music music for you, versus sound? Again, this question in the context of the modern music we have looked at usually makes for a pretty heated debate—please keep it fair, and remember that there is no right or wrong answer!
