Note that many of the narratives in this reader devote much of the text to devloping elements other than plot. For example, study the development of characters in paragraphs one and ten in “A Clack of Tiny Sparks” (p. 43), or re-read the description ofthe different ways that Amy Tan uses multiple Englishes in the third paragraph of “Mother Tongue” (p. 10).
Note that Cooper constructs his paragraph to read ike a unified description and not a list of details, while Tan adds more specific details in her description. After reading, pick a person or place that was/is significant to you–a place that helped you to develop your ideas about who you are and what your place in the world is. Write one to two paragraphs of description about it. Keep your paragraphs focused and vivid, and avoid depending on generalizations that give a reader little information (such as “a nice guy” or “a beautiful place”)
