Writing Assignment 2

HY101: History of Western Civilization I

Fall 2014

In this writing assignment, you have two options. Option 1 is to write a primary source analysis, similar in nature to Writing Assignment 1, except that you will analyze one of the primary source excerpts found in your Spielvogel textbook up to and including the sources dealing with Martin Luther (but nothing later than that). Option 2 is to write a creative work related to one of the primary source excerpts found in your Spielvogel textbook (with the same limitations – up to and including Martin Luther, but no later).

Both options should be no more than 3-4 pages, typed, double-spaced, with one inch margins on all sides. Your name, course number, Writing Assignment 2, and Fall 2014 should appear in the upper, right-hand corner of the first page only. You should also indicate in this section if you are choosing Option 1 or Option 2. This section should be single spaced. All pages after the first page should be numbered. No title pages please. Your paper should be stapled, preferably with the staple in the upper, left-hand corner of the page.

Option 1: Primary Source Analysis

As with Writing Assignment 1, you are to write an introduction that will include a clear thesis statement, then a summary paragraph of the source itself, an analysis of the source, and finally a conclusion that will restate your thesis statement. For this assignment, however, you do not need to convince me why your own analysis is important. The analysis should take up the bulk of your paper. The summary should be only one paragraph and should be written in your own words.

Remember, you must cite your sources in footnotes using the Turabian citation format. Any paper that does not include footnotes, or contains footnotes that do not have page numbers, will receive an automatic zero.

Option 2: Creative Project

As with Option 1, you will select a primary source excerpt from your Spielvogel textbook. However, in this assignment, you will use that source as an inspiration for and the main theme of a creative project. This can take the form of a story, a poem, a play, etc. No illustrations will be permitted, however. This is a text-only kind of project.

The only time that you will need to cite your sources for this project is if you use a direct quote (any part of a sentence, phrase, etc. that you take directly from the text). Then, you will need to provide a footnote using the Turabian format.

NOTE: You are only permitted to use the primary source excerpt and material from your Spielvogel textbook! As with Writing Assignment 1 any use of outside sources will result in an automatic zero!

As no two students may choose the same source for either option, we will take part of one class day to choose sources, so I would recommend that you take a good look at the primary source excerpts in the textbook and make a list of about 5 or 6 in case someone else chooses the one you want most. Primary sources will be selected at the beginning of class on Thursday, November 13, 2014.

As with Writing Assignment 1, I will be more than happy to look over a rough draft of your project. Due to the timing of Thanksgiving break, you will need to have turned in a hard copy (only) to me by Thursday, November 20. No e-mailed copies will be accepted!

The final version of this project is due on Thursday, December 4, 2014. I will only accept hard copies of this project. No e-mailed copies will be accepted! Since this is the last day of classes for the semester, no late submissions will be accepted unless an excused absence is granted (which means that you will need serious documentation!).
