Throughout this course we have discussed the role of context and how it affects our understanding of literature.

Primarily, we have focused on historical and cultural contexts and how they influence our interpretation. For

this essay you will write a 5-7 page research paper that accomplishes two main goals. First, your paper should

examine the historical or culture context of a story and describe how it affects the stories theme. Second, you

should use your paper to theorize how the events of the story would unfold in our historical and cultural context

(America, 2013). For this essay you will compose an argumentative essay. By argumentative I mean you must take a

debatable stance. Do not simply provide a plot summary or your feelings toward the essay. Your essay should

contain a clear thesis, evidence to support your claim, and quoted passages from the source text. For this

essay, you will also need to consult and cite at least four secondary sources.
