7. State ONE LOCAL sociological issue that you feel strongly about that is going on in our city. If you live in another city, state or country state the

city/state/country and the sociological issue you feel strongly about.

Working in a Houston ER I saw first-hand some of the horrible family situations that warrant the need for intervention and placement into foster care. Likewise, I have

also seen children placed in foster care where that situation was far from idyllic. There are so many problems here from teenage pregnancy, to people having children

that they cannot support financially, to system failure that I dont even know where to begin. The main focus that I would like to touch on is the lack of loving and

able families for foster children.

Next, do research on your LOCAL sociological issue. Using statistical data (meaning numbers and percentages), along with the demographics (location, what city was this

8. What are your hobbies? In addition, what do you like to do for fun? BE DETAILED!

I like to run with my friends. We run every Sunday and then go to an icehouse afterwards to drink a couple beers. I always bring my great dane with us. He always gets

a lot of attention and keeps things fun. I enjoy taking my dog to the dog park- his name is Walter. We also spend a lot of time at Terry Hershey Park along the bayou.

This place is beautiful- if you have not been there I highly suggest it. I love to read fiction. My favorite book is currently Gargoyle by Andrew Davidson. I do a lot

of volunteering for a wildlife rehab facility (mostly feeding baby squirrels during the two seasons) and several local dog rescues. I stay pretty busy.

The primary way that I volunteer (the one that is the most time consuming) is by fostering dogs. This involves taking a homeless dog into my house and getting them

used to people, training them- basically trying to make them an ideal pet. Also this involves taking them to the vet as needed and to numerous adoption events so that

people can meet them and see if they would like to adopt them. Ive fostered close to thirty dogs and about ten of those have been very large great danes. The last dog

that I fostered I chose to keep and that is how I came to be Walters person. I foster for several Rescues- Pug Hearts, Barrio Dogs of Houston and Great Danes of

Southeast Texas are the primary ones. I will tell you about GDRST. http://saveadane.org/

Their mission: We rescue abandoned, sick, injured, and abused Great Danes from various Houston area shelters and owner surrenders. We place all of our Gentle Giants

into foster homes where the Gentle Giants begin their rehabilitation. We temperament test each dog, complete a full medical evaluation including heartworm test, spay

or neuter each dog, and fecal. Our foster parents begin to teach each foster dog basic manners and prepare them for a loving home.

I got involved with this rescue when my old great dane had died and I was really feeling despondent. Fostering these mistreated danes helped me get over the loss of my

dog and I felt such joy at being able to help them at the same time. Also, we are helping people who sometimes have a change in their home lives where they no longer

can take care of their beloved pet and they know that they are being taken care of.

10. Discuss in 1-2 paragraphs, what you believe is the VALUE in volunteering.

The obvious value in volunteering is whatever service you are providing. Be it the time or the task. For me, there are so many animals to take care of and the

community of people who come together to take care of them is massive, and our efforts unified are amazing. We are a society of our own and that is rewarding in

itself. We get joy out of knowing we are making a difference in the lives of these animals. The animals certainly never thank you but their wagging tails sure do!

Mass media: In the video when visually demonstrating mass media the focus was on the news. I know that is a large source of information for many people, however I feel

that the video would have been more complete if some of the many different sources of internet media were shown. Almost all of us carry a little
