Aristotle, “Book II,” The Nicomachean Ethics, trans. David Ross, revised by J. L. Ackrill & J. O. Urmson (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1980), pp. 36-37 / 88:

“We must, however, not only describe virtue as a state of character, but also say what sort of state it is. We may remark, then, that every virtue or excellence both brings into good condition the thing of which it is the excellence and makes the work of that thing be done well… [T]he virtue of man will also be the state of character which makes a man good and which makes him do his work well.”

Explain in your own words what Aristotle means by the virtues and how they’re supposed to contribute to the good life. Briefly describe Alasdair MacIntyre’s modern take on the virtues with reference to the notion of a social practice. Does an Aristotelian approach to ethics, as formulated by either Aristotle or MacIntyre (or both) have relevance today? Give reasons for your answer.
