ALICE WALKER & MARGE PIERCY

ALICE WALKER & MARGE PIERCY

Make sure your exam reveals knowledge of both texts.

1. Marge Piercy "Woman on the edge of time"
2. Alice Walker "The Color Purple"

Your exam consists of one essays of at least five hundred words and two close readings. Remember that you are not required to perform outside research. In fact I discourage it. I am primarily interested in the your original ideas about the text. I will be looking for signs of your having read in their entirety both novels, which you will have an opportunity to highlight through thoughtful thorough references to texts beyond what I cite in the exam.

Please review corrections and comments on previous essays. Use complete sentences and active voice. Foreground your argument. Place a title at the head of each essay. Cite with parenthetical references to page numbers and a short Works Cited list at then end of the entire exam.

Part One: CLOSE READING (3-4 sentences minimum per answer). Choose two of the following four passages and read every word very closely. Pay attention to diction, figurative language, verb tense, grammatical structure, historical and literary allusions that construct a tradition of writing about women?s sexuality and reproduction. Write 1-3 paragraphs in which you explain: Why is the passage significant? What is going on in the passage and how does it relate to the narrative as a whole? How do characters figure and relate to each other? How does passage relate to other texts that we have read, to issues we have discussed in class? Who is speaking? In what kind of language and with what formal devices does it convey its meaning? USE COMPLETE SENTENCES.

1. ?Dear God,
Shug Avery sit up in bed a little today. I wash and comb out her hair. She got the nottiest, shortest, kinkiest hair I ever saw, and I love every strand of it. The hair that come out in my comb I kept. Maybe one day I?ll get a net, make me a rat to pomp up my own hair.
I work on her like she a doll or like she Olivia?or like she mama. I comba and pat, comb and pat. First she say, hurry up and git finish. Then she melt down a little and lean back gainst my knees. That feels just right, she say. That feel like mama used to do. Or maybe not mama. Maybe grandma. She reach for another cigarette. Start to hum a little tune?(53).

2. ?Anyhow, he say, you know how it is. You ask yourself one question, it lead to fifteen. I start to wonder why us need love. Why us suffer. Why us black. Why us men and women. Where do children really come from. It didn?t take long to realize I didn?t hardly know nothing. And that if you ast yourself why you black or a man or a woman or a bush it don?t mean nothing if you don?t ast why you here, period? (282-283).

3. ?Well, if a person can do something ?important, why should they chop onions and pick caterpillars off tomato plants?

?Connie, we think art is projection. We think making a painting is as real as growing a peach or making diving gear. No more real, no less real. It?s useful and good on a different level, but it?s production. If that?s the work I want to do, I don?t have to pass a test or find a patron. But I still have family duties, political duties, social duties, like every other lug. How not?? (267).

4. ?He had breasts. Not large ones. Small breasts, like a flat-chested woman temporarily swollen with milk. Then with his red beard, his face of a sunburnt fort-five-year-old man, stern-visaged, long-nosed, thin-lipped, he began to nurse. The baby stopped wailing and begun to suck greedily. An expression of serene enjoyment spread over Barbarossa?s intellectual schoolmaster?s face. He let go of the room, of everything, and floated. Her breasts ached with remembrance. She had loved breast-feeding?that deep-down warm milky connection that seemed to start in her womb and spread up through her trunk into her full dark-nippled breasts. Her heavy breasts opened to Angelina?s flower face, the sweet sunflower cradled in her arm. She had been borne on the currents of that intimate sensual connection, calmer, gentler than making love but just as enormous and satisfying. She had nursed Angelina until Eddie had absolutely insisted that she stop; for eight months she had nursed her. Angie had been a fat healthy baby. Only after Eddie had made her stop breast-feeding had Angie turned cranky about eating and become the thin doe-like child of the photographs? (134).

Part Two: Answer one of the following comparative essay questions.

1. Both Luciente and Celie practice and perform their sexuality and their daily lives in a way that incorporates aspects of masculinity and femininity, motherhood and non-reproductivity. Write an essay comparing and contrasting these two figures as vehicles for redemption of their respective societies.
2. In Woman on the Edge of Time, Connie travels back and forth in time in order to see how her actions directly effect the shape of the future. How do Nettie?s letters similarly move Celie across space and time, and enable her to act decisively on her own behalf?
3. In the utopian society of Mattapoisett in 2137, sensual pleasure, enjoyment and diversion derives from eating, dancing, coupling. What kinds of enjoyment make Celie finally also feel either ?happy? or ?content??
4. Among the Olinka, Nettie learns to appreciate similarities among the African ways and her people back home. Compare the practices and performances of blackness in The Color Purple to the vision of a post-racial culture where they had ?broken the bond of race and genes? in Mattapoisett.

Risk Register

Guidance Week 7 -Final Project
First let me reinforce what is presented in the course project description.  It seems a little confusing, so I will attempt to clarify when possible.
Please reference the template found in Appendix A, page 197, of the Practical Project Risk Management: The ATOM Methodology text.BUT, DO NOT COPY IT — USE IT FOR GUIDANCE.  Do not waste your time retyping the bullet point lists.  Look for sections in the template that are enclosed in carets ( <>) and work them into your document based on the sections described in the grading rubric.  But, use your own words.
Guidelines

READ AND FOLLOW ALL OF THESE GUIDELINES (I have highlighted portions)
Just a few reminders on your final course project paper:
•    You will be using the information that you have created in the weekly assignments to complete the paper, but you should not simply copy and paste the weekly assignments into each section of your final paper. Discuss how and why they are used in the project.
•    Ensure that each of your weekly assignments has been submitted and gradedand you have made corrections (do not lose points twice). Remember that the paper is only one part of your weekly work and that your weekly assignments make up critical information you will use to write your final course project paper.
•    Follow the format as indicated in the Deliverables section on the course site.
•    One of the most important steps that you can take: PROOFREAD your paper!!! Have someone else who does not know about the project read the paper. If he or she can read and fully understand what you’re saying, you probably have a good paper. Remember: you know what you’re saying, but does the reader understand the message that you’re trying to convey? This one element will save you time and the grief of a poor grade for grammar and readability. If you cannot find a proofreader, try reading the paper aloud.
•    Papers must be 15 to 20 pages in length (this would be roughly one page per area included in the report(not including the tables), 12-point font, double-spaced, and must include a cover page, table of contents (automate the creation see here http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word-help/create-a-table-of-contents-or-update-a-table-of-contents-HP001225372.aspx  ), introduction, body of the report, summary or conclusion, and works cited.  I realize that 15 pages seems a lot but remember that I am looking for your understanding of what each of the tools and templates means so do the who, what, and why for each template.
•    Even though this is not a scientific writing assignment and is mostly creative in nature, references are still very important.  At least six authoritative, outside references are required (anonymous authors or web pages are not acceptable). These should be listed on the last page, titled “Works Cited.” Hopefully, you read the assignment at the beginning of the course and this does not come as too big a surprise.  Use the DeVry library or textbooks from former classes for other sources.  Another option is to use Google Scholar (Google – click more, then click even more.  Near the bottom, you will find SCHOLAR.  Key word search on items in the course such as “project stakeholder analysis” or “project sizing”.  REMEMBER that you cannot just place articles in the references section.  YOU MUST cite them in the body of your paper.  I hate to give away the tricks of the trade but… you are in the section where you are writing on the stakeholder analysis.  Go to Scholar find an article on the importance of Stakeholder analysis.  Then it becomes Joe (2010) found that stakeholder analysis is very important to project success.  In the XXX project we performed a stakeholder analysis.  The project has YYY stakeholders.  Then you can do things like define the categories and reference the template and place it in an appendix or the body if appropriate.
•    Appropriate citations are required.Use APA format –DeVry web site has help.
•    All DeVry University policies are in effect, including the plagiarism policy.
•    Papers are due during Week 7 of this course.
•    Any questions about this paper may be discussed in the weekly Q & A Discussion topic.
•    This paper is worth 175 total points and will be graded on quality of research topic, quality of paper information, use of citations, grammar, and sentence structure. In Word turn on spelling and grammar checking .

Topic: Skills Builder 1: How to Read a Scientific Paper

Order Description

Skills Builder 1: How to Read a Scientific Paper

A scientific or research paper is a special type of document that requires special reading skills. Review the resource located under your weekly resources titled, How to Read a Scientific Paper, for some tips on how to read a research paper efficiently in order to make the most of the material in the least amount of time!

Skills Builder 2: Writing an Annotated Bibliography

a. Find the Resources on Annotated Bibliographies in the Northcentral Academic Success Center. The Northcentral Academic Success Center offers a wealth of resources for dealing with every academic writing need, from formulating a topic for a paper, to preparing an outline, developing an argument, and preparing a reference list.

Visit the Writing Center and explore the links under the topic headings, “Conducting Research” and “Forms of Writing” that explain the annotated bibliography, which synthesizes and presents research in a concise manner. You will use this information to create an annotated bibliography for this activity.

b. Review these Instructions on How to Construct an Annotated Bibliography Entry. You will see that in addition to the publication information (author, title, etc.), there are four main sections in an annotated bibliography entry. Each section effectively summarizes a key section of a journal article and is essential to the overall format.

The resources listed above for this assignment give additional guidance on writing an annotated bibliography. You will write many annotated bibliography entries during your graduate studies. They are the building blocks of your papers and research. Preparing an annotated bibliography is an excellent way to take study notes as well as to keep a careful record of what you read for your own future writings and research.

Note: The material in your Annotated Bibliography needs to be written after a careful reading of the article itself, and not just the abstract. Further, the Annotated Bibliography follows the same Academic Integrity regulations as other documents so ensure that you carefully paraphrase, or, if you need to, use quotes. The second most frequent Academic Integrity violations are given for poorly prepared annotated bibliographies.

Warm-Up Activity 6.1: How to Evaluate Research Materials

This week you are learning how to read research articles. This activity take you to another critical step as a researcher and academic scholar: how to evaluate the merits of research materials. This includes understanding the whys behind an article, who the authors are and their expertise, and analyzing the organizational flow and content. For a great overview of evaluating research materials, visit the Colorado State University’s Evaluting Resources, located under your weekly resources.

Warm-Up Activity 6.2: Learning Journal

Reflect on the following:

• How the information you learned can lay a foundation for future success in your graduate studies?

• How documenting information reviewed can help you to succeed in school and beyond?

• Any other thoughts or feelings related to this week’s experience?

Assignment

In your work on the Week 5 assignment, you located three scholarly articles. Using the guidelines and resources you have reviewed, create an Annotated Bibliography focused on those three sources. Provide either a copy of each article or a link to the article for your instructor as well.

Length: 3 entries – approximately 2-3 pages

Your Annotated Bibliography should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts presented in the course and by providing new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Your response should reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards. Be sure to adhere to Northcentral University’s Academic Integrity Policy.

Billy Wilson, All American Case

CASE
9
Billy Wilson, All American
In his senior year at a major midwestern university, Billy Wilson had been the third runnerup for the fabled Heismann Trophy. The trophy goes to the outstanding football player in America and is presented annually by the New York Athletic Club. During the past football season, Wilson had run for over 1,500 yards and scored 18 touchdowns. He had also caught 41 passes coming out of the backfield. His time in running the 40-yard dash, which professional scouts consider to be extremely important, was 4.38 seconds. He was voted first team All American by the Associated Press and was a second team All American in the Coaches Poll selections. On Monday morning, his agent, Joel Weinberg, called to say that he was looking at three different proposals that a major West Coast professional football team had made for Billy Wilson’s services. The team had drafted him in the first round of the National Football League draft as the sixth player selected out of the thousands of college football players that were eligible for that year. The Edmonton, Alberta, team of the Canadian Football League was also interested in Wilson’s services. The
Canadian team had called his agent over the weekend to put its offer on the table. While the NFL (National Football League) team that had drafted Billy Wilson in the first round had exclusive rights over all other U.S. teams to signing Billy Wilson during the current year, the Canadian team was not bound by such an arrangement and could make any offer it wished and hope the outcome would be positive.
Actual Proposals
The West Coast NFL team offered the following three proposals. The team’s general manager, who was in charge of contract negotiations, said his team would stand behind any of the three offers and it was up to Billy Wilson and his agent to choose which they preferred.
Contract offer 1:
• $900,000 immediate signing bonus. • $850,000 at the end of each year for the next five years.

final portfolio

ENGL 102 Final Memo Sheet(2-3 pgs, double-spaced)

WHAT YOU SHOULD WRITE ABOUT:
When looking back over your work from this semester, you may find it useful to pay particular attention to trends in your writing process and style. In looking back at your Midterm Memo, do you believe that you overcame the challenges you anticipated? Did you havedifficulty in the tasks in which you predicted you would struggle? Did you excel in the areas you anticipated you would find familiar? Was anything easier or harder than you previously imagined?

Once you orient yourself based on past predictions and failures/successes, you can then go on to evaluate your overall performance in this class. Isolate specific areas in your produced work that demonstrate where you believe you surprised yourself or worked particularly hard to improve.  Your reflections on your writing and writing process should suggest to your instructor the grade you have earned in this course.  Admit your weaknesses but celebrate your strengths over this semester. I especially would like you to demonstrate where and what areas you have worked on to improve your writing—give specific examples of where these improvements occur in your writing.

Finally you can consider where you’ll go from here.  Do you expect to utilize the skills and genres you have been exposed to in this course (analysis, summarization, proposal, annotated bibliography, research, argument, etc.)? Is there anything in particular that you’ll take away from this class to use in your major’s coursework?  Do you believe that you met all of the intended goals of this course, and will those goals aid you in your future endeavors?

FORMAT:
A memo is essentially a letter—in this case a letter from the student to the instructor.  You may find it easier to organize your thoughts through the use of headings in your writing process, but this is not necessary in the final product.

REMINDER:
This memo is to be included in your Final Portfolio for this course! You’re expected to edit and revise this paper on your own before submitting.

Unit 2, Assignment 2: IT Process Improvement Paper
Outcomes addressed in this activity

Assignment Instructions:
Every business has something they could be doing better, faster, and with less stress. Your task this week is to
identify one IT system at your internship location that could be improved upon. It might be something like a
process for approving leave that is currently being done by manual forms but that could be converted to an
electronic process or new employee orientation, which would improve efficiency by making the training
available in electronic format.
Talk with your Internship Supervisor and others in the department you work in for ideas and suggestions. What
would be an improvement for their workflow, processes, equipment or customer service?
Use the template provided in Doc Sharing to complete the IT process improvement paper. This paper will
become part of your final report.
Respond to the following:
1. I have identified the following IT process improvement focus at my place of internship.
Describe the problem or system that would benefit from a new advancement, renovation, or
augmentation. Include sufficient detail so that your instructor can really understand the scope of this
project. It is a good idea to have your work supervisor involved in this project with you to help ensure
that you understand the problem clearly.
2. The individuals who would benefit from the process improvement are the following:
List the workers or the customer client base. You do not need to use names. Alternatively, you can list
them by position and describe their duties or customer profile. It is important to understand as much as
possible the full impact of the problem. By identifying all impacted people, you will be in a better
position to provide a strong solution!

VESSEL MAP

VESSEL MAP

Blood vessels, (arteries and veins) change name much the same as roads change name.  For example, when a road splits or enters into a different region.  In the body, these regions are sometimes demarcated by a bone or muscle.  The easiest example of this is the respiratory diaphragm.  Above the diaphragm is the thoracic aorta-below the diaphragm is the abdominal aorta-it is the same vessel but because it passed through the diaphragm we name it something different (lucky you).
Your assignment is to give me directions from the heart to the tips of the fingers and from the heart to the toes following the arteries.  Tell me when there is sharp turn and what that branch off to the left or right is called (or superiorly/inferiorly).  Also tell me any landmarks (such as bones or bony landmarks) you pass that change the name of the “road” you are on or that might help you to identify where you are.
You will do the same following the veins from the toes back to the heart and from the fingers back to the heart.  There are many different ways for you to get where you are going and you only need to choose one set of directions but make sure you tell me about the other major routes that you either bypassed or that may have been a little bit up the road.
This is a big assignment and you should have four different sets of directions.  Please make this neat and show all  directions include a map drawing you may do so but make sure you write about bonny landmarks, body regions etc.
NB:DO NOT JUST DRAW ME A PICTURE OF THE VESSELS FROM THE BOOK!  I already have that.

Using Collins’ work as a model and framework for advanced organizational analysis (and other references as needed), analyze a system, organization, organization systems and/or subsystems.

The paper should be carefully written in a formal style, based on primary sources, provide an integration of ideas, and be 4-6 pages in length, excluding title page & reference list. Organized flow, logical progression of ideas, and clarity in thought are essential. Please use headings to separate content.

After reviewing the keynote and studying the readings, you should now be ready to proceed with your assignment. In this assignment, you will conduct an organizational analysis based on what you have learned from the readings in this unit. Using Collins’ work as a model and framework for advanced organizational analysis (and other references as needed), analyze a system, organization, and/or subsystems. Consider each of the concepts proposed by Collins’ breaking down the organizations’ strategic plan, financial management and systems, organizational structure, leadership, organizational culture, performance outcomes, etc. Collins’ research is good and provides a framework based on science rather than opinion or anecdotal observations. Consider the writings of Senge (1990) found in the Fifth Discipline and other related writers and models when performing an organizational analysis.

As part of this analysis, consider interviewing members of the staff, board members, organizational historians, key administrative personnel (CFO, CEO, CNE, etc.). Review what is written about the organization and its system in the local paper, regional documents, trade journals, etc. These qualitative methods, along with review of clinical, financial and other evaluation measures (quantitative measures), will provide a more holistic perspective of an organizational systems’ performance.
If you choose to perform the analysis of the practice setting in which you intend to do a capstone project, this assignment could provide you with much foundational work for your practice change. “Immerse” yourself into your organizational system, getting to know the inner workings, how decisions are made, informal and formal networks, how change and innovation are perceived, and other organizational system dynamics.

PSO Jane Roberts

Write a 2 page paper with title and reference page responding to the following:

Read the case study attached below
Case Study
Jane Roberts Public Safety Officer
Department
The Astonville Police Department has 166 sworn officers who are also certified as firefighters. Twelve years ago, the Astonville city council adopted a proposal to combine traditional fire and police personnel into one public safety unit. The measure was intended to reduce costs and make more efficient use of manpower. As it turned out, neither traditional police officers nor traditional firefighters liked the idea. While it did save money during the first few years, costs associated with the public safety officer (PSO) program have continued to rise. For one thing, turnover is very high. The city is always trying to fill positions in the PSO program. New recruits obtain training as police officers and then obtain training as firefighters. Once certified, they can apply for traditional police or firefighting positions elsewhere in the state, often making considerably more money than with Astonville. In an effort to keep officers from taking other jobs in nearby cities, the administration encouraged supervisors to be “easy” on discipline and to give officers under their supervision some leeway. As a result, officers are “allowed” to take extra time on breaks, take classes at the local university during their shift, and even take time out of their shift to go to special functions at their children’s schools and such. “As long as the calls are answered promptly, let them have a break if nothing is going on,” supervisors were told by the managers.
Crime
Astonville enjoys a low crime rate. It is located in a suburban area 20 miles from a metropolitan city. There were two homicides last year, both domestic in nature. Four rapes were reported, all involving juvenile girls with adult perpetrators. Fourteen felonious assaults and two robberies were the total of crimes against persons last year. Property crimes were up from the previous year, particularly residential burglary. Several new, high-income housing projects were developed in Astonville, which seems to have attracted burglars to the area.
Community
Astonville had a population of 84,000 at the last census. However, the city has been growing steadily for the past several years. Due to its convenient location to the metropolitan area and its low property tax rates, Astonville has become popular with younger professionals working in the metropolitan area. The result has been an increase in the number of subdivisions with high-income housing.
Astonville has a shopping mall and several specialty shopping centers. The downtown area hosts specialty shops and restaurants that are popular with the younger professionals that have recently moved to the city. There are seven public schools and three Christian schools. The Christian schools are also popular with the younger professional residents. There is one hospital and also several private clinics. The largest and most visible institution in Astonville is the state university, which normally has about 12,000 students. The state university has a criminal justice program, and the city frequently tries to recruit new graduates from that program into the Astonville Public Safety Bureau.
Officer
Public Safety Officer Jane Roberts has just fulfilled her six-month probationary period with the Astonville PSO Bureau. She was in the top 10 percent of her graduating class from both the police academy and the fire training academy. She is attractive, single, and young. She is also a bit self-assured, not afraid to speak her mind, and can hold her own with some of the more flirtatious male officers with her no-nonsense demeanor. Roberts has a lot of common sense and is capable of doing the jobs of both policing and firefighting, as she has demonstrated over the past six months. She graduated with a baccalaureate degree in criminal justice from the state university. Although she was offered jobs with other substantially larger departments, she elected to take the job with Astonville. The cross-training in police and firefighting is what attracted her to the department.
Problem
Roberts was assigned to a field training officer (FTO) for her six-month probationary period. Sergeant Williams, Roberts’ supervisor, assigned her to FTO Andrew Tibbetts. Sergeant Williams had some doubts about assigning Roberts to Tibbetts. After all, Roberts was an attractive young woman and Tibbetts, although married with two children, is considered to be something of a “ladies man.” Tibbetts is jokingly known as “Adonis” by other officers because of his extreme neatness and concern for his physical appearance. However, Roberts seemed to be able to handle these types of men and Tibbetts was the best FTO.
Roberts completed her field training and probationary period with high evaluations from both FTO Tibbetts and Sergeant Williams. And while Roberts is now on her own as a regular member of the shift, she still relies heavily on Tibbetts for advice and backup. Sergeant Williams also noticed a more than friendly “bond” between the two and has overheard other officers comment about seeing Tibbetts and Roberts kissing in the police parking garage on occasion. In fact, Sergeant Williams found the two having a heated argument in the parking garage last week. When the sergeant intervened to find out what was wrong, the two parted simply saying “nothing’s wrong.” The sergeant assumed it was a “lover’s spat” and decided it was none of his business so long as they both did their jobs.
The next day after roll call, Roberts stopped Sergeant Williams, asking to meet with him. The sergeant escorted Roberts to the supervisor’s office and asked her to sit down. Roberts refused to sit but wanted to explain what the argument was about in the parking garage between her and Tibbetts.
“Sergeant, I want you to know first. I’m pregnant. The baby belongs to Tibbetts. He won’t leave his wife and won’t have anything to do with me now.”
“Oh, Jane, I’m sorry to hear about that. But you know our policy about pregnancy. You’ll have to take a leave of absence and…”
“Damn your policies,” Jane interrupts. “This happened because of you. It’s your fault. You put me with that ladies’ hound for over six months. You knew what kind of man he was and how vulnerable I was. You didn’t supervise us at all, just turned us loose. And to top it off, I got pregnant on duty. I talked with a lawyer friend of mine last night, and she said I could claim workers’ compensation since my condition occurred on duty, right under your nose.”
What Would You Do?
Who is at fault in this case? What recourse does Sergeant Williams have at this point? What mistakes were made from the beginning, and how can future situations like this be prevented? Do you think Roberts has a workers’ compensation claim? The Nature of Discipline
The goal of discipline is to produce desirable behavior. This function can be accomplished by encouraging appropriate behavior and punishing inappropriate or unacceptable behavior.
Discipline, as an operational concept, is closely related to other managerial aspects of first-line supervision in paramilitary-type police organizations. It should not be viewed as a derogatory term or dirty word. In fact, discipline is regarded as the essential element in work that ensures overall productivity and an orderly environment. Unfortunately, it is the word discipline, in and of itself, that causes the problem. It has a number of different (at times conflicting) meanings and must be used carefully in order to avoid confusion.
The term discipline is most often used to describe an adversarial process resulting in the application of various kinds of negative sanctions or punishments. It may also refer to the state of affairs within a given organization that produces order, a shared sense of purpose, and common goal-oriented behavior. In this particular context, discipline is considered positive and means teaching, instruction, training, and remediation. Its purpose is to facilitate collective action, the internalization of self-control based on the norms and values of the workforce, predictable behavior, and organizational efficiency. From this perspective, maintaining discipline is a management function that involves conditioning subordinates in order to promote (1) obedience, (2) internal self-control, and (3) acceptance of punishments designed to curb individual deviance or professional misconduct.

Consider the following questions after reading this and place it in the paper

• Did Sergeant Williams make a sound operational decision?
• What mistakes were made at the beginning?
• How can future situations like this be prevented?
• Who is at fault?
• What sound operational decision should the sergeant now make to resolve the situation?
