Modeling Project General Instructions

The goals of this project are to use the skills that you are developing this semester to create an appropriate model for the given data and to analyze and interpret the results.

The class will be divided into groups of three. You will be given list of possible topics to research for your project. Your group may choose one of these or propose another topic to be approved by your teacher if you wish.

  • You will be working with this same group on a single data set for the entire semester.
  • You will use worksheets to explore different regression models and graphs in Excel.
  • You will turn in a written report in paragraph form answering the questions from each worksheet. Each section will be approximately 1-2 pages in length. You will also need to include an Excel printout of your graphed data and regression.

Each section you complete will make up a portion of your final project. Sections will be due every two weeks.

Near the end of the semester you will use the information gathered to decide which of the models you have created is most appropriate for your chosen data.

Your final project will contain:

  • each of the sections already completed,
  • the graphs of each model with the regression,
  • a description of your process throughout the semester,
  • an explanation of why the chosen model is the most appropriate,
  • an analysis and results of your topic,
  • model projections for the future.

Your project must include at least one additional source (other than where you found the data set) to supply more information on your topic and to aid you in researching your topic.

The group will work on this project mainly outside of class; however you may ask questions during office hours. Keep a log of your time spent as you will need to report that in your final project. You will be given a Group Member Assessment Sheet where you will be able to assess each person’s participation in the group. This will be incorporated in each member’s grade to ensure everyone does their fair share of the work.

Be sure to keep a copy of your data and graphs as you will need this for your final project at the end of the semester. I strongly suggest that you keep a copy of the data and work on each group member’s computer since computers crash, things get lost, etc.

Modeling Project Contents

The documentation must include as a minimum the following sections. Include a page break after each section.

  1. Cover Page: The Cover Page shall be creatively designed by the group to capture or summarize the essence of the project: it must demonstrate thought and imagination. Do not page number the cover page.

  1. Title Page: Must include the title of the project, each team member’s name, the date, and the instructor’s name. The title paged should be centered with each of the facts grouped and spaced accordingly. Do not page number the title page.

  1. Table of Contents: Each section in your document shall be listed by page number. Subsections may also be included. Each page from TOC and after should be numbered.

  1. Project Overview: Summarize the details of the project in a meaningful way. The Overview shall include an introduction to the topic being studied (the primary data used in the study, other information found by research, what questions you sought to answer, process taken).

  1. Section Details:       This part will contain the details of your research, fully describing what you did to obtain the results you got. This will include as a minimum,
  • data tables
  • correctly labeled and titled graphs
  • tools used
  • information gathered
  • equations and calculations
  • Section V should contain the best model chosen, predictions, conclusions and should wrap up the entire project.

  1. Evaluation Summary: This section shall contain what the group learned, mathematically and in general (i.e., working as a group, dependency on others for the effort, etc.) and what you learned from the project itself.
  1. References: This section shall include references to all data that were used to solve the project problem, listed in order of their appearance.

The project report MUST be entirely TYPED with consistent font and sizes. (NO part can be hand written).

The report must be handed in inside of a professional folder/binder that is easy to flip through.

**Use the Project Evaluation as a checklist to be sure you include all aspects of the report.
