You should consider this assignment as the culmination of all your experiences in American Sign Language this semester.
Deaf Again is the autobiography of Mark Drolsbaugh, a Deaf man who describes his life in a humorous, poignant, quick-reading style. In his story he describes many different issues that arise in his life – family, self-identity, the use of sign language or oralism with a Deaf child, Deaf schools versus hearing schools, socialization, etc. Consider one or two of these issues that interests you. Discuss the issues of your choice in relation to your visits to Deaf events, class discussion, lab assignments, the workbook, the lab video “Signs of Respect”, and personal experiences and opinions. A comprehensive paper will include references to all these facets of your course experience. No additional research is necessary.
This paper is NOT a book summary. You should NOT summarize the information in the book. Instead, this paper should be a comprehensive, thoughtful reflection of YOUR experiences this semester. Try to avoid vague comments such as “it was a good book” or “I learned a lot this semester” (which, of course, you will!). If you use quotations from the book to support your ideas they must be cited properly. To emphasize -this paper is a personal reflection of YOUR experiences, guided by information provided in Deaf Again. Do not use excerpts from websites that share what OTHER people have written, or use passages from papers that other people have written.
