Analysis of Text

Analysis of Text
The Assignment: Despite their many differences, most of the early 20th-century texts we’ll read during Dialogue Three share at least one significant element: an emphasis on the ways in which distinct characters come together to form communities and social worlds. In this paper, you’ll analyze any one of those texts, focusing on at least two (and probably more) characters and their relationships to at least one (and probably more) community(ies) within the text. This paper will be 4-5 pages (roughly 8-10 paragraphs) in length.

Some Sample Options: In order to detail a bit what I mean by the two elements on which you’ll focus, here are lists of some (but certainly not all possible) key characters and communities from two of our texts:

1) Larsen’s Quicksand: Characters—Helga Crane, James Vayle, Dr. Robert, Anderson, Uncle Peter Nilssen, Mrs. Hayes-Rore, Anne Grey, Audrey Denney, Aunt Katrina and Uncle Dahl Nilssen, Axel Olsen, Reverend Pleasant Green, Clementine Richards; Communities—Naxos, Chicago, Harlem/New York, Copenhagen/Denmark, Alabama.

2) Fitzgerald’s Gatsby: Characters—Nick Carraway, Jay Gatsby/James Gatz, Daisy Buchanan, Tom Buchanan, Jordan Baker, the Wilsons (George and Myrtle), Meyer Wolfsheim, Dan Cody, Henry Gatz; Communities—the Midwest, West Egg/Trimalchio, East Egg, New York City, the valley of Ashes, Louisville.

You are in no way required to use one of these two texts, and could construct similar lists for any of our readings from this unit. Feel free to run possible lists and choices by me.

The Essay: The first steps in planning your paper will of course be choosing which text you want to write about (your options would include not just the three novels but also the shorter works we’ll read over these weeks) and then identifying the particular characters and communities in which you’re most interested. It probably makes sense to choose more of each than you’ll ultimately include, and to map out a bit connections among characters, between characters and communities, and among communities that can provide you with starting points for sections/points in your paper and, eventually, a central argument as well. The paper itself will take the form of an argumentative analysis, with an intro (including a clear overall thesis), evidence paragraphs (including at least one specific and analyzed quote/detail per paragraph), and conclusion.

The Great Gatsby as my text and focus on the characters of Nick Carraway and Jay Gatsby in relation to the West Egg.
