Some commentators and scholars have labeled the mass media as “the fourth branch of government.” In this essay, I want you to first analyze and explain the consequences of private ownership of the media on the ability of the mass media to provide political information to the public.  Second, I would like you to comment on the media’s role in our democracy. Which democratic ideals are helped and which are hindered (discuss one of each) by what the media do?
