Anatomy of a midterm paper

Anatomy of a midterm paper

The main objectives for this assignment are: To encourage you to think critically about social issues using current sociological research and self-directed learning. To provide an opportunity for you to exercise your sociological imagination and choose appropriate sociological material for your research. To focus on thesis statement development and present a sample of your writing for constructive criticism. Instructions By now you explored the Concise Encyclopedia of Sociology. Search the Queen’s databases (username: 12zwt/password:[email protected]) to find two scholarly journal articles on your topic. Note: The scholarly journal articles must be current (within the last 10 years). They must be sociological (medical and psychological sources are not acceptable). They must be in English. A scholarly journal article is not a thesis dissertation, book review, conference paper or documentary. It is not journalistic article found in a magazine or newspaper. It is not a reference entry in an encyclopedia or dictionary. No material from the open web is acceptable. STEP 1 – CHOOSE YOUR ARTICLE AND CREATE ANNOTATIONS Carefully read through your two scholarly journal articles. Begin with the abstract; this will give you an overall summary of the article. Now proceed to the article itself. Make notes or highlight points as you go through the articles. These two articles are the beginning of your search for information related to your topic. Ultimately, you will be developing a research essay; this is a preliminary step along the way. Create an annotation (a brief statement of the most important aspects of each article for your particular research topic) of about 100 to 150 words. There is a handout on the Writing Centre web site and on the SOCY 122 Homepage on Moodle which will assist you in creating the annotations for this assignment. An annotation describes and/or evaluates the source. Identify the author’s main argument and conclusions. You must also indicate why this particular article is relevant to your proposed topic and the argument that you will develop. STEP 2 – FORMULATE A RESEARCH QUESTION On the basis of your two scholarly journal articles and the annotations that you have developed, you should be able to begin to formulate a specific research question. Think about what that research question might be. Organize your thoughts around the WHAT/HOW/WHY framework suggested in the writing workshop narrated power point and by the Writing Centre (concise guidelines on how to write a thesis statement can be found on the Writing Centre’s web site, in the Learning Commons in Stauffer Library, and on SOCY 122 course website on Moodle). In about a page, write out a preliminary opening paragraph with a working thesis statement for your potential second term argumentative essay. The introductory paragraph and thesis statement are almost inseparable. The thesis statement is a precise statement of what you are going to examine (the issue or topic to be examined), how you will examine that topic (what will be the main discussion points of your essay) and why the topic is important to examine (the “so what” question); the introductory paragraph provides an introduction to the topic (provides some background and context) introducing the reader to the topic and helping her or him understand why you have chosen your particular thesis statement (which you present at the end of the paragraph). If you choose to use more sources other than the two required journal articles they must be properly cited and referenced. STEP 3 – PRODUCE A WORKING REFERENCE PAGE Produce a working reference page that conforms to the requirements of ASA style notation. The ASA guide for this course is located on the SOCY 122 Homepage on Moodle. Reference pages are always on a separate page and you do not have to double-space your entries. A space between each will suffice. Part of your mark depends on your ability to properly format both the title page and the reference page in accordance with the ASA requirements
