Annotated Bibliography (Science and Humanities)

Annotated Bibliography (Science and Humanities)

Summary:

This assignment is to build an annotated bibliography of scholarly sources.

? Firstly, select one of the following three areas to be your research topic:

genetic screening; or organ donation; or surrogate mothers. These topics are to be considered from a point of view appropriate to the course Science and the Humanities.

? Secondly, conduct research to find scholarly sources (articles or books) that address your selected topic and in the process refine your research topic.

? Thirdly, select six of your best sources and provide a short (one-paragraph) critical evaluation of the source and its relevance for your research topic.

The submitted annotated bibliography must have an introductory paragraph that sets out your focus and approach to the topic, and then itemize your six sources, including under each source the one-paragraph critical evaluation.

Students must follow MLA citation format (Library>Research>Footnotes and Bibliographies).

Expanded Description: Research as a non-linear process

The object of this assignment is to train you as skilled users of university research resources. In this assignment, you will build the research skills that will become the foundation for your future work at York, in whatever programs or disciplines you find yourself. The assignment takes you through several stages of a research project. It asks you to think more carefully about research as an extended process of investigation, which combines strategic and efficient reading, and the active construction of a focus and question for your project.

As we have discussed in lecture and in tutorial, a research project includes several broad stages: a) choosing a topic; b) identifying your focus for that topic and defining your approach; c) developing a research question and thesis; and d) writing a paper. Research is an iterative and not a linear process. For example, you survey a topic with preliminary research; that is, you collect initial information that leads you to define your focus and approach. Then you return to materials or read further in more specific areas to develop a research question. Once you have developed a question and a thesis or an argument you might re-read or collect further materials to confirm your argument. This assignment allows you to focus on building your research skills instead of concentrating on the outcome alone or arriving at a written essay. You are evaluated on your demonstration of thoughtful, thorough research.

You will need to identify, locate and read or view at least 10 to 12 scholarly sources in order to arrive at your final list of the 6 best sources you have found. Your critical annotation must not be only an abstract or summary.

? You need to identify the author and his or her authority;

? Comment on the intended audience for the article or book;

? Summarize the content and purpose of the source briefly in your own words based on your reading (warning: do not quote or paraphrase a published abstract or pr?cis);

? Compare or contrast this work with another you have cited;

? Comment on the source?s relevance for your project.

Evaluation:

1. Correct MLA citation for each resource.

2. Clear paragraph that outlines the development of your focus and approach, demonstrating your understanding of the topic and your understanding of the appropriate context for this course (i.e. six articles on the techniques of organ transplantation from specialist biological sciences publications will not be appropriate).

3. Research effort, demonstrated by the range of your resources and their quality.

4. Your ability to summarize succinctly the content, structure and main arguments of your resources.

5. Your ability to comment on the relevance of the sources.

6. Correct file-labelling and format for Moodle submission
