Journal Article Critique
Assignment Brief / Structure Critiquing implies identifying the strengths and weaknesses of the article. Youmust justify and support what you are claiming with evidence. You need to putforward your own personal judgments about the article, but in an academicmanner. A critique is not a summary of the article, or a replication of what theauthor said, it is much more than that. You have to demonstrate to us, that youunderstand the whole research process, the concepts and terminology, and havesome insight into the accuracy of the data analysis.
You should use a critique framework to guide the structure of your essay. You will be given examples of these during the module; however you do not have to use the ones provided.
Many research books have a chapter on research critique, and they often include astructure or framework to follow. It is perfectly acceptable to use one of these, butyou must identify which one you have chosen to use and use it consistentlythroughout the essay.
Please use the following structure:
An Introduction
You need to select ONE research article to critique. It will be relevant to youracademic area. You should provide a rational for this choice. You should provide aclear outline what you propose to write about in the essay.
Main body
In the main body you are required to comprehensively critically appraise theresearch study. This would include, the title, abstract, who wrote the paper, theproblem or hypothesis, literature search, choice of method, data collection andanalysis, discussion of the results, dissemination of the result.
Discussion
You will need to consider possible STRENGTHS and WEAKNESSES of thework. Rees (1997) suggests that there are three questions that you should consider.
What does it say?
Can I trust it?
How does it contribute to practice?
It may be possible to compare / contrast the methods used with these studies withother pieces of research. Reference should be made to relevant research theory.
You should consider whether there is an indication for more research to be
undertaken in this area, and what the implications are for your own academic area
or professional practice.
Conclusions
You need to draw the critique to a conclusion, and make a final judgment aboutthe paper. In your opinion was it a good or bad piece of research. Whatrecommendations would you make about the findings? Should it be used andimplemented in your professional area?
