shows a thorough understanding of the subject matter including gaps and weaknesses in current theory and practice.
employs some critical analysis of theory as well as practice.
demonstrates an holistic understanding of the subject matter and its context.
has consistently high standards of written expression.

To obtain marks above 75% the following characteristics have to be been largely met in addition to those cited in relation to the 65 – 74% band:

Addresses the topic in a well conceived way demonstrating a capacity for in depth and sustained critical analysis, which reviews the validity of theoretical and practice perspectives and suggests appropriate solutions to problems/areas of tension or conflict.

Approaches the subject holistically and marshals arguments in a sophisticated way including the imaginative and effective synergy of ideas and concepts – ie shows creativity in distilling key insights and connections from a large and complex body of material.

Shows creativity in exploring the limits of current knowledge, interpreting existing or new areas of knowledge, and contributing to the development of theory.

Demonstrates capacity to explore the complex implications of ideas in clear and direct terms.
Work will be judged to have failed where it demonstrates such characteristics as:

limited evidence of understanding of existing areas of knowledge and practice, with very little awareness of gaps and weaknesses of such knowledge.

Limited evidence of synthesis and analysis.

lack of evidence of careful reading of appropriate texts.

Inadequate focus on the topic or question set.

failure to develop a clear and relevant line of argument.

inadequate use of supporting evidence, and disproportionate reliance on unsupported generalisations.

disorganised structure with incorrect or inappropriate sequencing of content/materials.

frequent examples of incorrect use of language, ambiguities of expression and unclear presentation.
