Arkansas lawmakers to vote on funds for alternative to Obamacare

Arkansas lawmakers to vote on funds for alternative to Obamacare

Once you have made your choice and gotten my permission, write an essay in which you take a position on the issue and support it with reasoning, evidence, and examples. Make sure to read Chapter 9 in our textbook for further insight into commentaries. A commentary is a more opinion-based, personal form of argument. Personal experience, when relevant, may be used in this essay, but be very careful that you don’t let it take over the essay. Don’t hesitate to ask for help or feedback if you think that might be occurring.

You must include a minimum of four secondary sources for this assignment, and you must cite those sources and document them with a Works Cited page according to MLA standards, found in Chapter 27 of our book. Furthermore, your research should be as authoritative and trustworthy as possible. In other words, you have to vet the quality of your sources. You shouldn’t use a source simply because you happen to agree with its point of view: that’s not a strong enough reason for including it in the essay. Finally, you may not use anything like an encyclopedia (including Wikipedia), dictionary, or the Bible or any other religious text.

Some important criteria for Paper Two: how clearly you express your thesis and defend it in an organized manner; how well you explain the basic issue and provide necessary background; how clearly you support the thesis with specific, concrete evidence and critical reasoning; how strong your research is; and how well MLA guidelines are followed.

The minimum for the essay is five pages and the maximum is eight pages—typed and double-spaced, with one-inch margins and no larger than 12-point Times New Roman font. Due dates for the rough and final drafts are according to the syllabus.

Peer Review Sheet—Paper Two

Using a new sheet of notebook paper for each essay you read, number your responses to correspond to the questions below. Sign your name at the top of the page, and when finished, return it to the writer whose draft you’ve critiqued. Then trade their essay with another student and start new peer review. Keep the peer reviews that have been done for you and hand them in with the final draft.

I. Read the following draft at normal reading speed from beginning to end. As you read, do the following:
A. Place a wavy line in the margin next to any passages that you find confusing, that contain something that doesn’t seem to fit, or that otherwise slow down your reading.
B. Place a “Good” in the margin next to any passages where you think the writing is particularly strong or interesting.
II. Read the draft again slowly. Describe for the writer what you currently see in this draft. If you have difficulty answering any of the following questions, explain briefly the source of your difficulty.
A. What is the writer’s position on the issue? Restate the thesis in your own words.
B. What did you find most surprising about the thesis? Can you imagine anyone who would not be surprised by it?
C. List the major supporting reasons provided in the paper. Comment on the effectiveness of their organization. Would the paper be stronger if these reasons were to be ordered in a different way? Why?
D. Comment on the strength of the evidence. What the strongest evidence given? What’s the weakest? Where could more be provided to help the commentary?
E. What does the writer do in the early part of the essay to make you want to read on?
III. Sum up what you see as the chief strengths and problem areas of this draft.
A. Strengths
B. Problem areas
