Art and Culture of the Medieval World

Art and Culture of the Medieval World

Order Description

1. Choose ONE person, event, key
concept or work of art from any medieval period discussed in your textbook and/or
films (in other words, you are prohibited from selecting for your essay anything
Roman or Renaissance — this means no Pantheon and no DaVinci!). Write an essay
in which you explain to your reader the historical and cultural contributions,
importance of, and significance of your selection to the Middle Ages and medieval
culture.
2. To research your person go to Google Scholar and JSTOR and type the subject in
the search window. Skim the titles in order to get an idea of how Medieval
scholarship views the contributions of your topic. If you don?t understand what the
scholars are talking about and you require more background, go to Wikipedia or a
web site for broader understanding but remember, you may not cite this information
in your paper.
3. Select one or more of the articles that showcases your subject and read it. Take
good notes. Write down a full citation of the location and author of the article
because you will need it for the bibliography and footnotes. NOTE: Don?t worry, you
don?t have to agree with the author of your article. You are using it to get more
information about your subject from a specialist in the field of Medieval Studies. If
you don?t agree with your author feel free to explain why.
4. Refer in your essay to some of the information found in your article or perhaps
even to your article?s key points. As you write, make it obvious to the professor
that you reflected thoughtfully on it (in other words, avoided vague references to it).

Scholarly Research Requirement:
This essay requires you to use scholarly articles you have chosen to read for the assignment. To find these you are required to use GOOGLE Scholar (avoid using just Google, it won?t reveal the scholarly articles and you?ll get lost in a sea of references you can?t use because they are web-based) and
JSTOR. You MUST refer to the scholarly information in footnote form or parentheses form accompanied by page number; and you MUST list your references at the end of the essay in a Bibliography section. Your references to the scholarly information must be clear and insightful, not vague which is to say at all times it must be obvious to the professor that you actually read a scholarly article and reflected thoughtfully on a portion of it for your essay. NOTE: In your citations of
information, you may NOT use WEB sources such as Wikipedia or Encyclopeidas as
your scholarly research (but you may use them to give you some background information if you wish and of course they have no place in your bibliography). In
addition, you may NOT cite any textbook, including Bennett-Hollister, or guidebook
or museum exhibition as scholarly information for this project. If you submit an essay that used your textbook and web sources for its content you will receive zero points for the effort.
