PAPER #3 – The Formal Analysis and the Juxtaposition of Artworks
OVERVIEW
In this paper you will revise and synthesize your previous two papers into a comprehensive
essay. You will compare and contrast two works of art in terms of their visual elements
(descriptions) and how they inform style and history. Please contextualize your analysis with the
larger issues discussed this semester in our lectures and in our book. Reflect on the larger themes
such as the development of linear perspective, chiaroscuro, national or religious narratives, and
the role of art in society. Use your text and and two articles from JSTOR to support your claims.
You must address and argue the pros and cons of your thesis convincingly as you have been for
your Journals.
Use the artwork from Paper #1 and chose another artwork from the Metropolitan’s collection.
The second artwork must be from an art period before or after the art period of your first
artwork. Paper #3 is written with the same format and principles as Paper #2, only you are
working with your Metropolitan Museum of Art artwork from the beginning of the semester and
choosing another artwork from the museum’s collection—from an art movement before or after
the art movement of your first artwork.
Remember: The introduction must contain a thesis statement which will focus your paper. Ask
yourself a question about the work of art that interests you to determine an answer. For example:
why do the statues of the ancient Egyptian queen Hatshepsut include masculine features, such as
a beard and kilt? Thesis: The Ancient Egyptian queen and pharaoh Hatshepsut, included
masculine features in her official portraiture in sculpture to assert her equality to the historically
male pharaohs.
As you have been working toward this goal of synthesis of critical thinking with formal (visual)
analysis and context, a period of revision does not follow. Thus, you will turn in your final draft.
FORMAT
– Six – seven pages in length
– 12 point font using Times New Roman
– 1-inch margins and double-spaced
– Submit to Blackboard
– Write your descriptions and comparison in a formal essay with an introduction, body (which
contains separate paragraphs each beginning with a topic sentence) and a conclusion.
– The introduction must contain a thesis statement which will focus your paper.
– You must hand in your notes.
RUBRIC
– 20% – Does the paper revise and synthesize materials from previous papers?
– 20% – Does the paper describe and compare the most significant aspects of the artworks in
terms of form, content and context?
– 20% – Does the paper engage with art historical jargon and ideas relating to art history
reflecting a clear understanding of the art periods’ history?
– 20% – Does the paper demonstrate fluid writing skills and clear organizations of ideas? Does it
have a successful introduction, body and conclusion? Is the paper presented in a professional
manner?
– 20% – Does the paper reference specific information from the textbook, JSTOR and cite this
information using proper footnotes?
GUIDE
– Begin your introduction with a unifying thesis statement. Ask yourself a question about the
works of art that interests you to determine an answer. Why does Van Gogh use such
expressively serpentine lines as compared to Matisse’s use of planes of saturated color? (Look
up the jargon in Stokstad’s Introduction). Thesis: Van Gogh interpreted the spiritual essence in
nature around mankind while Matisse wanted to provoke unabashed feeling and spirituality in
the individual through pure color.
– Begin with a visual description of the first artwork (as in Paper #1) and relate it to the
distinguishing cultural, social, economic, philosophical and religious features of the art period
(as in Paper #2).
– Visual describe the second work of art and relate it to the distinguishing cultural, social,
economic, philosophical and religious features of the art period (as in Paper #2).
– Compare and contrast both works of art.
– In each subsequent paragraph chose one point that supports your thesis (a visual fact such as
the use of color or depth and its extended cultural meaning) and discuss how the works
similarly or differently convey meaning according to this point.
– Your conclusion should reiterate your thesis and tie your supporting evidence together.
