Up to ten additional points can be earned by writing a short paper, 2-3 double-spaced pages in length. Unlike other papers in the term, this assignment may not be completed with a partner. The goal of this paper is to apply the concepts discussed in class to a current (i.e. this semester) newspaper or newsmagazine article that describes any kind of research study. The paper should include a brief summary of the article as well as a critical analysis of the research in which you apply relevant concepts from the text, lecture, and/or lab to the particular research study described in the article. (For instance, does the article include enough information? Are the conclusions valid? Is the sample biased?). You may also want to explain the procedure that the researchers used in the sorts of technical terms that you have learned this semester. The paper MUST be based on an article that was published in a newspaper or newsmagazine (such as Time, Newsweek, the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, etc.) during the current semester (i.e., August 25, 2014 to December 1, 2014). A copy of the article MUST accompany the paper, with the date and name of the source clearly indicated.
