Creative Project:
For your final, you will be required to undertake a creative project that “activates” much of the theory and concepts in postcolonial studies. What this means is selecting two or more concepts that you would like to engage with – such as, “what is the nature of national identity?” “is hybridity a marker of postcolonial subjectivity?” or “colonization is not only historical, but also ideological in nature” – and illustrating your argument through a creative lens. If you choose to write a short story, for example, use the setting, characters, narrator, etc to explore your chosen concepts. What does the protagonist (or narrator) do or say that brings theoretical questions to the attention of the reader? Does the context in which the story occurs affect the characters choices/desires/conflicts?
You may also decide to write a series of poems that tackle issues of postcoloniality. Those of you interested in creative non-fiction (true stories told with a flair), can take on a research project involving a historical or contemporary topic which you will write up/contextualize in the style of your choosing (memoire, oral history, literary journalism, etc).
Alternately, you can choose to do a performative project: examples of such projects could be a stand-up comedy set, short film, spoken word performance , a live “music video,” performative art installation (such as an altar, a performance art piece, etc.)
