Assignment 2—PEP learning goals and competencies

Students will develop their professional learning goals based on a self-evaluation of their ability to meet the NMBA National competency standards for the registered nurse. These goals will explain what is hoped to be achieved, strategies to do so and ways of assessing they are meeting these goals.

Students will submit a report which reflects their ongoing evaluation, refinement and achievement of their professional learning goals. This and their preliminary statement should provide evidence (such as exemplars) of their progress and achievements. Students must identify strategies to meet any clinical learning goals not fully achieved in this professional Experience placement. Students must discuss all four domains of the NMBA national competency standards for the registered nurse.

My placements

I was doing my clinical placement in the Memorial Hospital in Day surgery unit and theatre and recovery unit last for 8 weeks, it was very interesting to me, so I have developed and understand different skills.

I have learned how to do pre assessment   and collect all details for patient that needed to be ready for theatre. Moreover, I have improved my communication skill when I interview patient and participate with nurse staff, according to NMBA(Collaborative and therapeutic) stated that it is important to have good communication with individuals and group to facilitate provision of care particularly in using a range of effective communication techniques.

I have learned how to receive clinical hand over from theatre staff and Anaesthist, check the patients ID band with anaesthetic nurse and clinical note, maintain patient airway, give jaw support if necessary, and observe patient until become fully awake from anaesthetic.

the post-operative recovery where RNs basically provide specific observation and implementation with patients after surgeries and anaesthesia; the nursing staff’s most important responsibility in post-operative recovery is to make sure the airway is functioning without any obstruction. In addition, I have learned and improved how to do hand over to the ward.

I mostly practiced and have gathered practical experience and skill .According NMBA (Professional practice) the second clause, fulfilling the duty of care. This clause described the responsibilities and requirements of a registered practicing nurse in the working place. I came to learn that nurses need to perform according to the practice standards to ensure the safety of the patient, co-workers and the nurse himself. While I was providing medication under supervision from preceptor such as IVT, I had to follow the aseptic procedures to prevent the communicable diseases. Before administering the medication and after completing the administration I decontaminated my hands by using hand hygiene. Also it is my responsibility to check 7 Rights and take the necessary care about the patient and so I asked the patient about how the patient is feeling and after finishing the administration of the medication I requested the patient to call me if feels any discomfort or need any help. This is reflected my duty of care to the patient. At the same time it is my duty to care about my co-workers. So I disposed all the materials properly in the right bins to ensure the ease of work of my co-workers and also to prevent contamination of diseases to team mates. .

In additional, according to NMBA, (the provision and coordination of care) explains how to ‘document a plan of care to achieve expected outcomes’. This standard was established to ensure that plans of care are based on an ongoing analysis of assessment data, that the plan is in line with current nursing knowledge and research and that all documentation is clear. I found this to be an obvious approach to nursing. One of the assessments that identify a patient’s plan of care is the pain score. When I asked one patient to rate his pain on a scale of zero (no pain) to ten (aggressive pain), he described his pain at being a level eight of ten. Then, I had to consider the face expression and use behaviour observation to analyse the data in order to provide a good treatment action. Since his pain score was eight out of ten, I have to follow pain protocol based on the memorial Hospital policy. I documented the updated pain score under supervision from my preceptor, the treatment action used to address the pain, the medication and dosage that the patient received and the outcome. I found that tools are useful when assessing a pain score because clear documentation allows for the provision of precise data interpretation and the achievement of desired outcomes. Finally, I do believe that seeking feedback frequently is very useful strategy that would keep me well updated.
