Assignment #6 – Concept Paper/Chapter 1

This is an individual homework assignment. It should be as long as necessary. I would prefer that you pick a qualitative topic and write as if it were the Chapter 1 of your dissertation [Note that the difference between a qualitative and quantitative Chapter 1 is small]. Use Chapter Six from Mallette, Chapter 6 from Creswell, and chapters 11 and 12 from Roberts to guide you in writing these sections. I would expect this assignment to be between five and fifteen pages long. This assignment should be done per APA-6^th, and should include the following sections.

1. Title page per Pepperdine guidelines (page 1)
2. Introduction (start of page 2)
3. Background/recent history of the issue if appropriate
4. Statement of the problem
5. Statement of the purpose
6. Recent statistics on issue if appropriate
7. Research Questions (try to keep it to one question)
8. Hypotheses
9. Significance of topic
10. Qualitative methods you will use, and your population, why u choose them*
11. Key definitions
12. Key assumptions and limitations of the study
13. Summary
14. References (on last pages)

* Note. Item 10 above is not usually part of chapter 1, but I am including this because it is an important part of convincing someone to be your advisor. Use Creswell’s chapter 3 and others.

Deliverables for assignment 5:

3 points – Hard Copy. One paper copy to me before you start your discussion.

1 point – APA. APA formatting is correct throughout the paper.

1 point – Page count. Proper number of pages.

1 point – Text. Adequate thought put into sections 4, 5, 7, 9 and 10.

10 points – Discussion. Spend 10 (TBD) minutes sitting at our tables, please promptly introduce your research topic and discuss the boldface items 4, 5, 7, 9 and 10 in detail.
