Look closely at Exercises 4.1 (p. 203) and 4.2 (p. 208) in our logic textbook. What you’ll learn are about the following:

a) Subject and Predicate terms

b) The Letters or Propositions: A, E, I, O

c) Quantity (whether the proposition is “Universal” or “Particular”) and Quality (whether it is “Affirmative” or “Negative”)

d) Distribution (whether it is about all of the subject and predicate terms or not referreing to all of the subject and predicate terms)

Questions:

i) Identify the quantifier, subject term, predicate term, quantiy and quality in the following categorical propositions; and

ii) Identify or name the letter (A, E, I, O) and state whether the terms (subject and/or predicate) are distributed or undistributed:

1. All men are dog.

2. Some good people are part-time lovers and cheaters.

3. No vampire movies are fils without blood.

4. Some executive-pay packages are insults to ordinary workers.

5. No stressful jobs are occupations conducive to a healthy lifestyle.

6. Some universities that emphasize research are not instituitions that neglect undergraduate education.

7. All philosophers are idiots.

8. Some useful people in this community are professional prostitutes.

9. All politicians are good liars.

10. No bad people on this earth who lived unwisely and irresponsibly are in communion with God in heaven.

A categorical syllogism has 3 propositions: 2 premisses (major premiss and minor premiss), and the conclusion with 3 terms (major, minor, and middle) and each appears 2x in the argument. It also has a specific order, and has a mood (64), figure (4), and the argument-form (256). See pp. 265-267.

Develop 5 syllogistic arguments with the following:

a) two premisses and a conclusion

b) 3 terms (major, minor, and middle)

c) indicate the mood, figure and argument-form; and

d) determine whether each argument is valid or invalid.
