Elizabeth Kubler-Ross, Thich Nhat Hanh, Morrie Schwartz, and poets Billy Collins, John Donne, and Mary Oliver express their attitudes about death. Which one do you tend to agree with? Write an essay in which you examine ONE of those writers? ideas about death and explain how you see that you might apply his or her ideas to your life, or how someone else, a specific person who is very close to you, might apply them. I suggest that you keep it simple by focusing on just ONE of the writer?s ideas, not the whole article.

However, I?d like you to use TWO brief quotes from the article or poem you?ve chosen. Please refer to the handout on Quoting and Citing for MY requirements for that. If quoting from a poem, however, I suggest that you Google ‘quoting from a poem’ and find a website that explains it. But it?s not necessary to use line numbers as they will instruct you to do. Do not use any outside sources. You should only quote or cite the readings we’ve done.

Make sure you include an introduction that has a clear thesis statement, telling the reader what idea you agree with, and the title of the article or poem and author?s or poet?s name. Present at least two quotes and explain in your own words what you think the author is saying. Then give examples of how their idea can be applied in your life, or for someone else. However, do not turn your point into giving advice to your reader. I would hope that you apply it to YOUR life, but I?m leaving it up to you to decide if you want to do that or not. Make sure you have a good conclusion as well. For some ideas about conclusions, go to writingcenter.unc.edu/handouts/conclusions. Also, be sure to provide an interesting title.

Minimum length: 900 words

The essay will be graded on organization (including having a clear thesis statement, transitions between paragraphs and the effectiveness of your introduction and conclusion) breadth and depth of development, correct usage of quotes, and proofreading.,
