Bergman’s portraits
1. How do Bergman’s portraits connect with Morrison’s notion of strangers?
2. Throughout Thoreau’s essay he poses questions—for example, “Why is it that men give so poor an account of their day if they have not been slumbering?” (paragraph 7) or “Why should we live with such hurry and waste of life?” (paragraph 11). To what extent does he answer the questions he poses? Why might he leave some unanswered or only
partially answered?
3. Morrison and Thoreau are both interested in
human relations. Do you believe these authors’ ideologies are complementary or oppositional? How so?
