Alternative Energy Paper
Due: Nov. 18, 2014 (25 Points)

Scenario: You are the president of a small developing nation. Your constituency voted you into office because you have promised electricity for all. You have also promised to provide electricity free from any foreign dependency, while maintaining biodiversity and solving unemployment.

Additional Information:
1. Your country signed the Kyoto Protocol.
2. You promote biodiversity and conservation programs.
3. Your country is in debt to foreign nations because you purchase energy from them.
4. The unemployment rate is 10%.

Country location
If you are assigned Country A, your country is located at 38° 27′ 44″ N / 92° 18′ 7″ W.
If you are assigned Country B, your country is located at 47.0000° N, 110.0000° W
If you are assigned Country C, your country is located at 28.1000° N, 81.6000° W
If you are assigned Country D, your country is located at 43.6867° N, 85.0102° W
If you are assigned Country E, your country is located at 44.0000° N, 71.5000° W
For country assignments by student name, see last page of this document.

Beginning the paper:
Begin your paper by stating your “country name”. (Your country will actually be a state within the United States, but you will operate this area as an independent country). You should acknowledge your participation in the Kyoto Protocol and what this means for your country in regards to energy procurement and use. Explain your promotion of biodiversity (particular to your state) and conservation programs. Acknowledge your debt to foreign nations and your intention to become independent in energy production, while potentially lowering the unemployment rate.

Ranking system
Rank each energy type for each factor listed using the following system:
5 = very feasible, low impact, low cost
4 = good feasibility, marginal impact, lower cost
3 = feasible, low impact, reasonable cost
2= low feasibility, substantial impact, higher cost
1 = marginal feasibility, major impact, costly
0 = no feasibility (determined by geographical limitations –example: country is not located near water)
Example:
Feasibility Environmental Economic cost Employment Opportunities Recommendation
Energy Q 5 5 4 3 Score= 17 rank = 1
Energy X 4 3 1 2 Score = 10 rank = 2

If there is zero feasibility, you need not address environmental impact or economic cost. Place a zero in the score area and a zero for rank.
The recommendation box could have rankings from 0-14 or any spread lower. For example if you rank 2 alternatives the same, your ranking scale could be 0-13. If you have several energy sources that are not feasible (i.e. rank zero), your spread will be lower. Highlight the rows of the three most recommended alternatives energy options. This completed table will be placed into your paper.
Table 1: Give this table an appropriate title
Feasibility due to geographical location Environmental impact – biodiversity Economic costs Employment opportunities Recommendation
Score Rank
Nuclear Energy
Wind power (land)
Wind power (water)
Biodiesel
Ethanol from crops
Photobioreactors
Geothermal
Ground Source Heat Pump
Retention Dams
Run of River
Wave Power
Tidal Power
Passive Solar
CSP
Photovoltaic Cells

You will follow this table with the following information in paragraph form.
My first alternative energy recommendation is
Insert paragraphs here that explain why you are recommending this alternative energy, where it will be located in your country, and why it will be located there. Keep your information very specific to the geographical location of your country and physical land features within your country. Explain the possible biodiversity impacts and what you will do to minimize these impacts (and /or) why you are willing to accept the impacts. Explain the economic benefits to your country and how this approach will help lower the unemployment rate (and /or) why it will not lower unemployment but is still a viable approach. Use multiple, expert sources to support your recommendation.

My third alternative energy recommendation is

Use multiple, expert sources to support your recommendation.

Source Requirements:
Nine sources (in addition to the information posted to BB or presented in power points). These sources must be recognized experts in the area of alternative energy for which they are cited. While you cannot cite the power point lectures, you are free to access information from the sources used in the power points (these would be sources other than the textbook). You may use ONE source for each recommended energy alternative from class material. The other 2 sources for that energy alternative must be located by you.
Be careful not to plagiarize your sources! While an occasional quote may be justified (ex: amount of energy cost savings), most of the paper must be in your own words. Do not cut and paste from a source, try to rearrange a few words and claim this work as your own. This is still plagiarism. At this point in the semester, I expect you to be off this “crutch.”
