Task A – Summary Points
a) The context

Starbucks was a company found in 1971 in USA, Seattle, Washington which is a premier roaster, marketer and retailer of specialty coffee with over 15,000 stores currently. The product mix of the company includes coffees, tea, a variety of fresh food items and other beverages.
Current CEO of Starbucks is Mr. Howard Schultz.
It can be stated that the CEO Operates in the context of a production environment where the main motive is satisfying the customer with maintaining a good relationship and attachment with the customer.
The organization’s culture encourages diverse workforce providing a workplace based on direct and open relationship with the management.

b) The style of leadership

The leadership style of Mr. Howard Schultz can mainly be classified under the theories of “Democratic Leadership” and “Transformational Leadership”.
“Democratic Leadership” is where independent opinion and input of members for the leader are allowed the ultimate business decisions are made by the leader yet with the contribution of the members.
“Transformational Leadership” is defined as the style of leadership which is established upon achievement of high level of moral and motivation.
The leaders and followers are bound together with the strength of leader’s vision and personality.

c) The examples

Democratic Leadership

i.    The CEO has decided to treat every employee as a “partner” that allows employees to provide him with their open and independent opinion and input.
ii.    The CEO seeks continues opinion and feedback of employees though personal calls and e mails.

Transformational Leadership

i.    Employees are motivated with high level of moral with the given levels of decision making powers at the individual employee level.
ii.    Further the CEO has allowed the employees to choose their convenient working hours by which the employee motivational is kept at high levels.
iii.    The employees are provided with benefits such as health coverage, bonuses and retirement savings, tuition reimbursements, recognition programs, 30% store discounts and etc through which the employee are expected to be highly motivated.

d) The relationship between the leader and the staff

The employees are treated as partners of the business.
CEO relies on personal communication with higher level department and with the general lower level management.
Mr. Howard Schultz believes that admiration and motivation of employees is critical since then they’d repay by working harder. Based on this the perks and benefits such as health coverage, bonuses and retirement savings, tuition reimbursements, recognition programs, 30% store discounts and etc are provided for the employees at CEO’s personal interference.

e) Assessing the leader against a framework of “Authentic leadership”

According to Stephen P.R. & Thimothy A.J. (2013);
Authentic leaders know who they are, know what they believe in and value, and act on those values and beliefs openly and candidly. Their followers consider them ethical people. The primary quality produced by authentic leadership, therefore, is trust. Authentic leaders share information, encourage open communication, and stick to their ideals. The result: people come to have faith in them.

i.    Self awareness – Mr. Schultz’s awareness of business and self strengths and weaknesses is high and his ideas, goals and approaches towards employees is the key to success of his leadership style.

iii.    Ethical/moral conduct – diversity of the work force is maintained at a high level which promotes the ethical and moral nature of the organization.
iv.    Balances processing – CEO relies on personal communication with higher level department and with the general lower level management and more power is given to employees in decision making. (the process of decision making is decentralized)
