1. When modelling the selected business process, whose perspective should we be looking at, i.e. the provider or consumer? Do we have to describe and model all perspectives?

The scope and level of detail of the process model is pretty much your decision as there are no specified levels of detail. This decision will depend on your target audience and the modelling purpose, and also influence how many “sides” you want to describe. Do note that the description of your selected process scope should be explicit and clear, including a list of assumptions made, e.g. it is assumed that the user already has an account with X, and therefore the creation of an account is excluded from the scope.

2. The assignment specification asks for references to support your description of the chosen scenario?

The idea of using references is to show that you have looked into how the process in the selected scenario actually works. Typically, 1-2 references would be enough and in any case, you should not have more than 5-7 references. A refererence can also be a website where a given process is described.
3. Should the models be generic and not design-specific? E.g. Are we to include specific functions such as “Click X button” or should it be described in general terms such as “Select option to X”?

“Click X button” is not a good label for an activity. A more “generic” model is preferred. This would also enhance the reusability potential of the developed process models for other purposes.

4. How many pages do you expect from us?

No more than 30. Please refer to the assignment handout.
5. How long/complex should the process models be?

We do not have a checklist to analyse how long process models have to be. A rule of thumb, your model should contain around 20-30 nodes (activities, gateways, events).

6. Our team is modelling the [insert scenario here]. Can you please take a look and provide constructive feedback on whether or not we are on the correct path?

As per the Assignment 1 rules (see handout), the teaching team will be available to answer general questions about the assignment during consultation hours, and will not pre-mark your assignment. Lecturers and tutors are NOT reading report drafts and review detailed models prior to the submission of the assignment. Feedback will be provided in written form, when the marker returns the marked assignment back to the students. Students are also welcome to discuss any further queries about the feedback of the marker.
7. What should I put in the modelling conventions section?

As per the Assignment 1 rules (see marking criteria), you are required to compile a section in which you illustrate the modelling conventions that you have used in your process models. The idea is to come up with a set of conventions that regulate different aspects of your models, e.g. layout conventions (left to right, top to bottom), labelling style conventions (verb+noun, action+noun), conventions on what modelling elements from BPMN you have decided to adopt and what you have decided to leave out (e.g. OR gateways are not used), etc. It may sound trivial to you, but don’t underestimate the importance of modelling conventions. Often process models within the same project are very inconsistent from each other because no modelling convention was established, or because the process owner did not enforce such conventions in the project. And the result is that these models can hardly be reused, combined, adapted. So the objective of this part of the assignment is to take the good habit of establishing a set of conventions BEFORE starting the modelling exercise, and to enforce such conventions in all models. This is precisely what we will assess.
