CASE ANALYSIS

Order Description
COUNSELING AND THEORIES CLASS
Case I Summary:

Frankie, an 18 year old Asian American female, majoring in Conflict and Analysis, who has come to counseling because she is considering transferring to another college so she can have a “fresh start”. She is particularly distressed about the break up because this was her first long term relationship (1 ½ years). She thought that Charles was the ‘perfect man’ for her and thought they might get married some day. Frankie explained that Charles was gorgeous, smart, and funny. As a couple they saw or spoke to one another almost every day either at school or by phone throughout high school. During the last month of their relationship, he began to text her rather than call or visit her on campus.

When they both came to Mason last fall they had a great time living away from their parents’ homes. They began being physically intimate within the first month. Both Frankie and Charles had been virgins until then. She explained that during her first semester, she decided to pledge a sorority and work part time at the Fitness and Aquatic Center which both took up a lot of her free time. In retrospect, Charles frequently complained that he did not see her enough and that he suspected that she was seeing someone else. She thought that once the pledge period was over they would resume their close relationship. After she became a member of the sorority, Frankie would go out on the weekends and drink alcohol with her sorority sisters. Periodically, she invited Charles but he was not interested in “getting drunk.”

Approximately two weeks ago, she and Charles had a big fight and he broke up with her over text. During the text argument he told her that she was “spoiled, dumb and unattractive” and that no one would treat her as well as he had over the past 1 ½ years. Frankie insisted that she was not “cheating on” him and that she was the same good person he met in high school. Since the break-up Frankie has questioned her self-worth. She stated that she has not gained weight since attending Mason, she is overweight compared to her friends and sorority sisters. She also noted feeling fatigued, having a head cold for the past few weeks, spending most of her free time alone, crying frequently “for no apparent reason” and considering transferring to another school so she does not have to see her former boyfriend who refuses to even speak to her.

Frankie is the youngest of four children, from an intact marriage. Both of her parents were alcoholics and have limited resources to financially support Frankie. When she was young Frankie witnessed loud arguments between her parents involving shouting and pushing. The client commented that she felt scarred, helpless and conflicted about which parent to align herself. She secretly wished her mother would leave her father who was psychologically and verbally abusive towards everyone. Frankie’s roommate suggested she speak with a counselor about her issues and change in mood and decision to transfer schools.

Frankie has not identified a major or career goals. She explained that she came to Mason to be close to Charles, “and I messed that up.”
