a. Read the book, Celia, A Slave by Melton A. McLaurin i. As you read, take notes and/or highlight interesting passages, points you do not understand, or items that you find interesting. ii. Create three questions based on the book – Submit by the deadline. iii. If you read one chapter each week, you will finish the week before the paper is due – try not cram the whole book in the week before you need to write the paper! (See below) b. Write the three body paragraphs of your essay by answering the following three questions: i. Body Paragraph 1: What was the main idea or argument of the book? Provide a brief synopsis of the story so that your following analysis makes more sense. This should not include specific quotes or references, but should be a general overview IN YOUR OWN WORDS. ii. Body Paragraph 2: What can you learn about (race/gender) in the 1850s from this book? In this paragraph, consider some of the specific experiences and interactions related in the book. What do these situations reveal about life in this era? iii. Body Paragraph 3: What does an analysis of the book reveal about the source? Who was the author? What was their argument or main point and was it convincing? Would you recommend this book to someone else? Why or why not? How does the information in the book compare to what you read in the textbook and learned in class? c. Write the introduction and conclusion paragraphs for your essay. i. As with the article analysis, these are the sections to “hook” a reader ii. Remember to use creative writing techniques, but also follow the format of a five-paragraph essay and inform the reader of the main point in the introduction. d. Submit your Essay #2 Rough Draft to SmarThinking i. SmarThinking is an online resource to which San Jacinto subscribes that allows an outside reader to critique your paper and provide feedback ii. Follow the instructions that are provided for Submission – make sure you explain the directions for the assignment as instructed so that the reader knows what you are supposed to be writing. iii. Remember to allow 24-48 hour turnaround. If you correctly submit your paper but do not receive a response within 3-4 days, notify me as soon as possible – do not wait for the deadline and tell me at the last minute! iv. Submit the “E-Structor Response” via email as proof that you submitted to SmarThinking
