Chosen management skills

1. Identify the most commonly cited skills and competencies associated with successful managing and leading in organisations.

2. Nominate one skill to develop further which you believe is a ‘strength’. This skill is likely to be a competency you are relatively good at, you are passionate about, and (hopefully) your organisation also values highly.

3. Nominate a second skill you believe would make a good ‘complementary behaviour’ to develop alongside your chosen strength. Working on a strength and complementary behavior is a little like cross-training in sports; it will help you to perform at a higher level.

4. Justify your selection of both management skills based on relevant past experiences (especially any ‘critical incidents’), self-assessment exercises, future career ambitions, and/or relevant theory.

5. Pinpoint those ‘guidelines’ (principles, methods and/or theories) which have influenced your past approaches to these nominated skills (that is, explicit or implicit theories-in-use, conscious and unconscious, which inform or direct your practice).

Assessment criteria:

1. Identification of skills identified with successful managing and leading (10%) •

2. Justification for personal selection of chosen management skills (30%)

3. Articulation of relevant guidelines (principles, methods and/or theories) informing past practice of your chosen skills (30%)

4. Quality of written communication (20%)

5. Quality of referencing based on Harvard style referencing(5%)

6. Evidence of thoughtful self-assessment (5%)
