Debate Four Prompt:

In The Penelopiad, we see the story of Odysseuss absence and homecoming told from Penelopes point of view, but we also hear from Penelopes maids. The account of her behavior that they give contradicts both the impression of her that we get from The Odyssey and her own account of her behavior and experiences. Are you more sympathetic to Penelope, or to the maids? Is the idea that Penelope used the maids and then set them up for slaughter plausible to you, or do you believe that Penelope did her best to protect and save the maids, and that she cared for them like her own children? Whose side do you believe?

For argument: Penelope truly cared for her maids, and was powerless to stop their slaughter; if she used them, it was only to help them all survive.

Against argument: Penelope simply used her maids as tools and spies, and their slaughter was convenient for her, since it covered up her behavior; she didnt truly care about them.
