1. Writing Imperium: Both Livy and Virgil treat the origins of Rome in ways that
reflect upon social and political issues contemporary to the rise of Augustus and the
transition from Republic to monarchy. Discuss in detail how one or both of these
authors treats Rome’s mythic past in terms of present concerns. How does Livy
AND/OR Virgil use literature to engage with problems that have relevance in their
own times? If you choose to work on both authors, you may compare and contrast
their approaches.

Citing

points.
However,
if
you

sources,

must

Use

which
you

not
acceptable

this

its
conceptions
of
power
and
honor.

or
more
characters
from
works
we
have
read
and
analyze
the
ways
in
which
they
reflect
upon
Roman
constructions
of
gender
vis–]a–]vis
social/political
power.
You
may
investigate
the
construction
of
masculinity,
femininity,
or
both
together
as
sides
of
the
same
coin.
For
example:

Aeneas;
Lucretia
and

Camillus
and
Aeneas;
