You are a network engineer and you have been asked to implement the hardware design and suggest the software needed for a large organization with 5000 employees that want all server services in house.

Your tasks are the following:

  1. Identify 2 possible appropriate server infrastructure models for the company. One should be based on multiple rack servers and one using a SAN infrastructure with blade servers (3rd lecture). Future expansion needs should be considered. Draw diagrams of your 2 hardware designs including legends for all devices and connections. Use software like Microsoft’s Visio in order for your design to look professional.

 

  1. Find appropriate devices for your 2 models describing their capabilities and features.

 

  1. Describe all the software that in your opinion would be necessary for the company.

 

You are required to work in groups of 4 or 5 students. You don’t have to report your groups to me. Enter your names into the final document and deliver it to the faculty’s office.

The last 2 labs (3+3 hours) will be dedicated to the assignment. I will be there to assist you. If this is done properly you will not have to dedicate a lot of time outside the lab. I expect some students to ask some questions about the assignment. If these are not based on their work I will make my answers available to everyone via email and providing further clarifications in the assignment document. I will provide additional time apart from the labs for assignment discussions with individual groups.

Marking Criteria:

Written Report (50%)

  1. Fully documented and correct approach with justification of the hardware and software used. 50%

Network Diagram (50%)

Your diagram(s) should be accurate 30%

Your network diagram should have correct legends 20%

Threshold Criteria:

To achieve a pass (40%), the report must demonstrate a basic understanding of server architectures which will also be reflected on the diagram. You must provide a justified Written Report and diagram of the network.

To achieve a first class (70%+), the written report must include justified analysis of all networking and server components included.
