By Aristotle’s definition, a tragedy provokes feelings of “pity and fear” through a main character who suffers as a result of some flaw–usually hubris–which causes him to fall. Compare and discuss the personalities of Oedipus, and Othello in terms of this definition. What are the traits of each character; what qualities do they have in common, and how do they differ from one another?What seems to be the “fatal flaw” in each that causes him to fall? What is it that makes the sufferings of these characters and their stories TRAGIC?
