Once you have completed reading the lectures, doing the discussion and taking the quiz, complete this short answer (200-250 words) listening assignment by defining the two forms of Theme and Variation and Fugue as used by Britten in his composition, Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra.    Focus your observations around the following concept and questions:

Define these two forms as you describe how Britten uses them to introduce instrumental character and teach the sound of the orchestral instruments.
How is “melody” used differently in the Theme and Variations structure vs. the Fugue structure?
What are the four instrument families and how would you describe their “character”?
