The aim of this assignment is to undertake a range of tasks involved in analysis, design and build of a database structure and SQL Applications for a database system for Al-Siraj equipment hire firm. Where information is not available, you should make reasonable assumptions. Make sure that you include all business constraints that have been captured during the analysis part.

Specification
The aim of this assignment is to undertake a range of tasks involved in designing a database to hold the records for a firm of hiring DIY equipment to domestic and business clients. The firm is introducing a database system in order to manage the equipment on their books.
Al-Siraj Hire firm is a small family business that stocks general equipment such as garden tools, car maintenance tools etc. for hiring to its customers. A database system is required to simplify management of the business and to provide some financial information.
Equipment is classified under various categories. Equipment is of different brands within each category. Brands vary in their prices and are obtained from various suppliers. The known categories are:

a) Gardening Equipment
b) Building Equipment
c) Access Equipment
d) Decorating Equipment
e) Car Maintenance
f) Power Tools
g) Heating and Lighting
h) Miscellaneous

The following sections specify the requirements of the system.

Requirements
The computer is to be used when a customer visits the company to hire equipment. At this time the following processing is necessary for each transaction:
• If not already known (i.e. not previously entered into the DB), the customer’s details are recorded.
• The equipment to be hired, with expected return date, is recorded.
• The equipment stock as recorded in the database is updated automatically.

When the equipment is returned, the following processing is required:
• The actual return date is entered.
• An invoice is printed which shows the item borrowed and calculates the total cost including VAT. The cost should be based on a rate for one day plus a rate for each additional day. The daily rate varies between weekdays and weekend days.
• The stock figures are adjusted.
• There is 10% discount for Business customers on all equipment hire.

Sample SQL Applications
The following SQL Applications are planned to be displayed on screen (i.e. produce the SQL code only, no form or report):
A1. For given particular equipment type, show current stock and current items on hire with expected return dates.
A2. For a particular customer, show the current items he/she has on hire with expected return dates.
A3. A list of currently overdue customers, showing equipment on hire and the customers’ phone numbers.
A4. Produce, for a given category, the total number of items under that category available in stock and the number currently on hire to customers.
A5. For any given item (e.g. identified by a unique barcode), list the description of the item, the name of its category, the purchase price, the date of purchase, the daily hire rate and the date of last hire.

Deliverables

D1. One A4 page containing the conceptual data model diagram (i.e. an Entity Relationship Diagram using consistently either Chen or UML notation – no other notation is allowed) showing:
• Relevant entity type
• The candidate keys (only) for each entity
• Relationship Type with role name (plus any relationship attributes if any)
• Structural constraints on each relationship (both cardinality and participation)
Note: if you show attributes other than the Primary Keys (e.g. Foreign Keys) on the conceptual model then you will be penalised.
D2. For the above model, produce the logical data model (the relational schema) (one A4 page). The model represents your mapping from the conceptual model into a relational schema and should show for each prospective table the primary key, the list of appropriate attributes and any necessary foreign keys.
D3. One A4 page containing a normalised set of relations with all attributes listed. On the same page, state clearly any assumptions that you make about the data, in particular, noting any information that you believe should be included, but is not mentioned in the outline specification.
D4. Create a database for the above schema in Oracle DBMS using SQL and populate each table with typical records to clearly demonstrate the application results. No other proprietary software is allowed to be used in this CWK (e.g. VB, Java Script, etc.)
