Concert Review

Concert Review
Each student is expected to attend a performance of “art music,” including repertoire from any periods or genres in which you have an interest. If you are unable to

attend a concert in your community, please contact me directly. This concert should include a printed program and must be attended in its entirety. In order to receive

full credit for this assignment, you must submit a detailed response paper (minimum two full pages typed, double spaced, Times New Roman 12 point font with inch

margins on all sides) in which you should comment on a minimum of three works: one from the beginning of the program, one from the middle, and one performed at the end

of the concert (please include composers and titles). You may choose to write about the concert environment, the performers, audience members, or aspects of the pieces

or performance that you found noteworthy. I will be looking for correct usage of musical vocabulary and evidence that you are developing listening skills (please make

at least one comment on aspects of sound, melody, rhythm, harmony, texture or form).
You will necessarily utilize terms related to music and reference stylistic features presented in our in-class reference materials (articles and writings) that relate

to specific time periods. You will likely make comparisons of the performed repertoire to other musics presented (recordings) and discussed in class. This may include

expressing your opinions about performance quality as well (application of information literacy).
It is interesting to know about your personal reactions to music from various style periods, compositional methods, and specific composers (as relevant), and these

writings also serve to display your advancing critical and creative inquiries (analysis and interpretation of historical and performance practices) throughout the

course of the semester. They will also serve to strengthen your communication about those analyses and interpretations.
Please note that as this assignment should focus mainly on application of musical terms and descriptions, I do reserve the right to deny these materials the rating of

“satisfactory” for inclusion in your WSU writing portfolio. These papers must be handed in no later than two weeks from the date of performance.
Grading Rubric
Points         Above Standards
3    Meets Standards
2    Below Standards
1
x1    Thesis Paragraph: Is the thesis paragraph clear and well organized? Is its content consistent with the content of the paper?    Introductory paragraph is well

designed and leads to a strong discussion of the materials presented therein.    Introductory paragraph covers relevant materials, but with a weak assertion. This

paragraph may be rambling or incongruent.    Introductory paragraph is not relevant or assertive. It may be disjunctive or insufficient in detail to carry the

paper.
x1    Content: Have you formulated a cohesive, detailed discussion? Does the paper demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the details of the topic?    Ideas

are supported with substantial concepts, details, or explanations from text and/or discussion.    Ideas are minimally supported with concepts, details, or explanations

from text and/or discussion.    An attempt has been made to add supporting sentences, but concepts, details or explanations are unrelated or confusing.
x4    Paper Organization: Does it have clear, focused topic sentences? Does the paragraph serve as a focused unit of thought? Does the sequence of information create

a logical and compelling discussion?    Organization enhances the major ideas. The order of information is compelling and moves the reader through the text.    Attempt

is made to organize ideas but paragraphs do not flow into a coherent whole.    The writing lacks a clear sense of direction. There is no identifiable internal

structure.
x4    Writing Style: Does the writing serve the needs of the discussion? Are sentences well formed and efficiently developed? Are there issues of grammar or syntax?

The style, spelling, punctuation, and grammar are accurate and appropriate for the professional style being emulated. Only 1 error made.    Style, spelling,

punctuation, and grammar are generally correct. Clear attempt at adapting a professional writing style. 2-3 errors made.    Errors in spelling, punctuation, and

grammar. Lack of awareness of professional style components or needs. 4 or more errors made.
Paper Length: Have you written a paper of appropriate length? Any length missing from the paper will be deducted from your grade. (Ex: a one-page paper will lose 50%

of your paper grade.)
A total of 30 points is possible. Points received based on the grading rubric are then divided by 3 allowing for 10 possible points towards your final grade.
