Assessment 3: Research Essay Weight: 50% Total word count: 2500 words Purpose The research essay is an opportunity for you to demonstrate your ability to express an argument in written form in accordance with the disciplinary conventions of film studies, and in the context of the unit’s focus on film histories and historiographies. INSTRUCTIONS Select ONE of the following research topics, and write an essay in response to it. i. The term intermediality offers a way to think about the history of film, and cinema as an institution, in terms of its relations to other media and art forms. Consider the history of intermediality of at least two films in the unit (at least one must be a feature-length production). Further Guidance Timecode The usual convention is not to include timecode in academic essays but rather to rely on written description to orient readers to any scene, shot, etc, that you are discussing. Images You can include a screengrab and label it as a figure (figure 1, 2, etc), if it aids your analysis. Citation style MLA or Chicago 16th A style.
