Content analysis is a research tool used to determine the presence and importance of certain words, subjects and concepts within text. Social researchers quantify and analyse the presence, meanings and relationships of these words, subjects, and concepts, then make inferences about content, such as the messages within the text, the political or ideological position of the writer(s), the audience, and even the historical standpoint, culture, and time of which these are a part. Texts can be defined broadly as books, book chapters, essays, interviews, discussions, and newspaper headlines and articles – which is the case with this assignment. To conduct a content analysis on any such text, the text is read carefully, considered and examined to identify and contextualise themes, words, senses, views, prejudice, setting and perspective. Step by step advice on how to undertake a fundamental content analysis report are provided below.

a) Choosing the Article

The crime news story for selection will be from a British newspaper online, and will be accompanied by at least one photographic image or illustration linked to the story. There will be no subject restriction or historical date restriction on the article. Once selected, you should download and print from the original online source, such as www.guardian.co.uk so that you have a working copy for reference. You DO NOT need to include a copy of your selected newspaper article with the submission of your assignment but you MUST make reference to the story title, newspaper, and web address on your first page (title page).

You should select a story or topic that interests you (perhaps you might have done some work/reading in the area previously) and ensure that there is an appropriate criminological body of research to support your analysis.

Weigh the information you have gathered on the subject chosen for your analysis. This will help you to build the foundation for the report, and reach considered and valid conclusions. Evaluate your sources, and then plan the structure of the report. Each of your key concepts, with the information you have gathered on them, should form a discrete section in the body of the report and be organised in a logical way.
Most basic reports contain the following sections: Title; Introduction; Main text; Conclusions; Recommendations (optional – is this public policy area?); Bibliography.
