Convergence of sexuality, gender and healthcare

Recent debates in the United States about gender, contraception, and access to medical care raise an important question: should the government provide free contraception through the Affordable Care Act? Consider Sandra Fluke’s story in 2013 in the article Rush Limbaugh Blasted for “Slut” Comment. For sociologists, particularly conflict theorists, gender inequities can be explained and understood through the lens of power. Is it a social problem for families to lack access to healthcare? Who wins and who loses when families lack access to care? What sociological theories best address the lack of access?
