RESEARCH ASSIGNMENT
Research Paper: As the semester goes on you will learn about communication theories. Importantly, you will want to know how knowledge in our field is developed. To help you see how scholars add to a body of knowledge you will conduct a mini research project that will demonstrate your understanding of this process. This paper will be written in groups that we assign and will be due toward the end of the semester. More information regarding the assignment will be forthcoming.

This assignment will be five pages in length and will be the equivalent of a literature review that develops a rationale for a quantitative study of the communication phenomena stated below. This paper is worth 70 points.

1.    Variables.
a.    You will select from 2 independent variables below. Your paper will consider how these variables influence the outcome variable.
b.    The independent variables you can choose to study include (select 2):
i.    Neuroticism
ii.    Extraversion
iii.    Risk propensity
iv.    Sensation-seeking
v.    Empathy
vi.    Agreeableness
c.    The outcome variable or Dependent Variable (DV) is:
i.    Propensity to complain to an organization after a failure (see BeachBoard article).

2.    Paper. The paper is split into 2 sections.

SECTION 1: INTRODUCTION
In this part of the paper it is your job to tell readers about a) The importance of conducting this study, and b) why the variables you choose to examine in your study are appropriate and important.
a.    This part of the paper will be 2 pages in length and, as mentioned, will outline two things.
i.    The first thing is the importance of conducting this study in a general sense. It is here that you will use articles on consumer complaining and customer satisfaction to build an argument that suggests that keeping consumers happy is an important part of a company’s operating concerns. You need to use the library to find at least 3 articles to build your introduction.
ii.    Part two of your introduction will outline, in approximately two paragraphs, why you want to study the communication variables you chose to as they pertain to consumer complaining. YOU NEED TO USE A THEORY OR MAJOR APPROACH HERE. So, for example, if you look at Neuroticism and Extraversion, you might consider using the trait approach. If you do this, you need to convince us that consumers’ traits (in general) are important factors that influence a person’s propensity to complain – again, you do this by using previous research to substantiate your case (not just your own prediction). This part of the introduction makes the case that not only is the study of consumer complaining important for the scientific community, but the specific examination of SOME MAJOR THEORY OR APPRAOCH will be useful for explaining how complaining works.

SECTION 2: RATIONAL
b.    The second part of the paper is your rationale and it will be 3 pages and will include the following information:
i.    For each variable you need to tell me why you think that the independent variable should affect the outcome variable. That is, based on previous research (not your intuition or previous experience), you need to convince me that each independent variable can accurately predict the outcome variable. To do this you need to read articles examining the independent and outcome variables with research that has already been conducted. Once you do this, you need to look at previous studies’ results and then use these previous results to create coherent arguments for the connection between the independent and the dependent variables. So, for example, some things I might look for include whether or not Neuroticism has been linked to behaviors like complaining in the past or if empathy has predicted conflict behaviors in previous studies.
ii.    You need to write a hypothesis regarding your prediction about how each of the independent variables you just wrote about will be related to the outcome variable. The hypotheses need to be statements that are written as a prediction that can be falsified.

MISCELLANIOUS
c.    For this paper you will need to
i.    Provide a reference page for all sources
ii.    Use proper APA formatting
iii.    You MUST see either me or our TA (Caitlin Porter) at least once during office hours to go over a version of your paper

GRADES
Grades are calculated as follows:
90-100%    = A
80-89.99% = B
70-79.99% = C
60-69.99% = D
00-59.99% = F

For clarification: This is how CSULB defines the letter grades:
“A” – Performance of the student has been at the highest level, showing sustained excellence in meeting all course requirements and exhibiting an unusual degree of intellectual initiative.
“B” – Performance of the student has been at a high level, showing consistent and effective achievement in meeting course requirements.
“C” – Performance of the student has been at an adequate level, meeting the basic requirements of the course.
“D” – Performance of the student has been less than adequate, meeting only the minimum course requirements.
“F” – Performance of the student has been such that minimal course requirements have not been met.
