In order to best evaluate that issue in the US (or any jurisdiction), it is imperative to closely examine the traffic accident and fatality data in order to come up with effective traffic safety enhancement strategies.  Please examine the data available at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration webpage (at: http://www.nhtsa.gov/NCSA), and the most recent annual (2013) report summarizing vehicle and pedestrian accidents across the US (at: http://www-nrd.nhtsa.dot.gov/Pubs/812101.pdf).  Summarize the most important and interesting points that you noted.
