The question is this.
Technology and sex/sexuality are intertwined. This is especially the case with medical technology. It helps intersex people to fit in the male-female (penis-vagina) binary. _Strange Sex_ documentaries show various patients that underwent medical procedures to gain/regain a “normal” sex life. The person who restored his foreskin after circumcision used the term “nature” multiple times. The designer vagina examples suggest we can get a nice looking genitalia if we want. But does this mean? Of course, these are all positive considering how patients are generally happier after their procedures. But is this use of medical technology so good when it reinforces our view on what is natural/normal? Discussing on what is normal necessitates the presence of what is abnormal. Any types of labeling comes with an exclusion. Some intersex patients get a “normal” sex but it forces us to live in the binary. Designer vaginas leave millions of vaginas that don’t look like what you see on TV. Technology can be used positively. But are we using it right? Or are we focusing so much on what’s important at the superficial level and ignoring what might be more important in the long run?
