Research shows that positive peer relationships can lead to increased academic achievement. The Learning Resources provide a number of specific strategies for creating a safe and effective learning community by establishing respectful and caring relationships. In this week?s media segments, several teachers discuss their strategies for helping students establish positive relationships with each other. Recall how teacher Melanie Carmona integrated the theme of "creating community" into her content instruction, allowing her to meet academic goals while building her students? social skills. Reflect on your academic goals for your students and consider how building positive peer relationships can help support these goals.

With these thoughts in mind, select three strategies or activities you learned this week for creating positive peer relationships. How might you adapt these strategies or activities for your grade level and/or the needs of your specific student population? Next, consider how these strategies or activities can be integrated into a content lesson or unit.

Post the strategies or activities you will use to promote positive peer relationships in your classroom. If applicable, explain how you will adapt them for your grade level and students. Next, describe how you will integrate the strategies or activities into your content-based instruction. Be sure to cite information from the Learning Resources to support your thinking.
