Each group will critically analyze a claim from the list below. Each group will initially pick three possible claims to analyze, and one will be decided upon for each

group this morning. Claims and dates for each group will be assigned today. Each group will research, critically analyze, outline, prepare Power Point Slides and

record for class presentation.  Each group will meet  to decide on what their preferred topics will be, divide the work, and plan your research and presentation.

Discuss sub-topic ideas and individual assignments. Each individual must use at least two credible sources of research information.  Each group member should cover a

different aspect or angle of the assigned claim.

Claims: (Each Group picks three possible topics)  Each student type a 1 page outline using the handout sample as guide.

1. Active euthanasia (physician assisted suicide) should be legal and available to those how choose to use it.

2. Genetically-modified foods are harmful to human health.
3. Obesity rates in the US have been exaggerated in recent years.

Each group must answer the below questions about your claim. Each individual in the group should be assigned 2-3 questions each that they are responsible for.

1.    Briefly define the claim and its counter argument.
2.    How plausible is the claim itself?
3.    Does the claim conflict with your personal observations and background information?
4.    Who are some of the people and sources making the claim?
5.    What are the interested parties for this claim?
6.    What types of information has been transmitted about this claim?
7.    What rhetoric and fallacies are used with respect to this claim?
8.    Is there scientific research on the claim?
9.    Are there any scientific findings about this claim?
10.     What are the best ways to assess the probabilities of this claim?
11.     What are your conclusions about your claim?

This assignment requires a comprehensive application of the elements of critical reasoning that we are studying in this course.  The main objective is for each student

to follow the systematic critical reasoning process to thoroughly document all relevant information in analyzing and making an argument.
Each person in the group will be responsible for doing a critical analysis of one aspect of a topic chosen by your group.

Part I (Research – 50 points)  due  in  12 hours

•    Each group will choose a claim to research, outline and present to the class.
•    Research information online. Use and list at least two references (per person) on your outline, APA style (see sample).

Part II (Presentation – 50 points)
•    Briefly summarize your information for the class (3 minutes each!).
•    DO NOT READ YOUR MATERIAL WORD-FOR-WORD TO THE CLASS!!!!!!
•    Tell us what sources you used in learning about your topic during your presentation, and list them on the key word outline.
•    Look at the audience (eye contact) as much as possible in your presentation.
•    Following each presentation, the audience and I may ask follow up questions.
•    You may refer to your outline or Power Point slides, but do not read them word-for-word.

Part III (Outline/Slides – 50 Points) due in 5 days
•    Each individual in the group is responsible for submitting their own outline and a copy of their slides following the presentation.
•    Each student type a 1 page outline using the handout sample as guide.
•    Double-space and use a 12-point font.
•    References-List 2 sources at the end of your outline (website, book, or magazine) from where you used information. Use the APA style format.
•    Each individual student completes 4-5 Power Point slides to supplement their presentation.
•    Bullet point your slides and outline.  Do not put too much text on slides!
•    Submit Outline and Slides in Dropbox.
